View Full Version : What mold made these...????

A buddy gave me a some of these 30 yrs ago, and they have been in a box ever since. Finally dug them out to see how they might shoot out of my .41 mag Contender. It carries a factory 10 in. barrel and a red dot sight. Don't you know, with a mild load of Winchester Superlite powder...I'm getting great groups, have lost track of the guy I got them from, and have NO idea what mold they came from, or perhaps if a commercial caster is currently offering them.
FWIW: they are .410 dia. scaling 208-209 grains. Overall length is approx. .750 in. The long nose measure .34 in. near as I can tell.
Any ideas are welcome:

Thanks.

Looks like a standard keith mold.

My Saeco 411 mold looks exactly like those, but they weigh 230gr. with an alloy of 50% WW and 50% fairly soft range scrap

Lyman 410459 comes to mind. Advertised to drop at 220 gr., but with a harder alloy could be lighter.

RCBS has a similar design, basically a Keith style.

I think you are right. http://www.lasc.us/FryxellElmerSay.htm

Both the RCBS and SAECO 210 SWC molds have a shorter nose. The Saeco has uneven band lengths.

Most of the commercial 210-220gr .41 SWC boolits are bevel base with the shorter nose.

Looking like it's a Lyman 410459. Like dkf says...pretty much all the commercial guys are offering a SWC with much shorter nose.
Anybody know of a commercial 410459 offering...???
I was hoping to NOT have to cast my own for this one...I spend enough time already casting roundballs for the ML, and 25,30,348,and 45 cal. rifle bullets, but it could happen.
Thanks for the responses. Glen Fryxell's stuff is always great to read.

That bullet is from the old Lyman 41032 mould. 210 grain plain base , long nose. Bought mine when I bought a S&W model 58 41 mag. years ago....still a great mould and no mine's not for sale.

Looks like the nose on Lyman 41032 has straight angled sides and unequal length bands which the OPs does not.

OP I found some boolits for sale that look like your boolits but they are heavier at 230gr. Maybe buy a smaller amount and give them a shot.

410459 cast of linotype. When I had that mould mine looked exactly like that and weighed 209 gr fully dressed.

Looks like the original Ideal, Lyman "Keith" to me.

Larry that is exactly the information I was looking for. Thank You. These look like the 41059, but couldn't figure out how hard they must be to get the weight so far below Lyman's spec. with their #2 alloy.
That tells me a lot. Thank You.

Guido;
Don't hesitate to seriously consider casting your own pistol bullets for that .41 magnum. With a good, four cavity mould, it is no great trick to cast up 20 lbs of match grade bullets in an hour and a half or so. Anyone of my four cavity (or five or six) will allow me to do that or better.

Jump on in, the water is FINE! Alloyed bullets are much easier to cast than pure lead round balls in my experience.
