View Full Version : My first unfixable problem with a Lee mold

I have an older single cavity 8mm rifle mold, and I decided I wanted the current version with two cavities. I wanted to double my production and then I was planning on converting the single cavity to plain base. Good thing I didn't start fiddling with the old mold before testing the new one.

It turns out that the new one casts a boolet with the gas check shank too big for a gas check to fit. Neither the Hornady nor the aluminum ones I bought elsewhere will snap over the shank, and trying to force them on with the sizer has met with mixed success at best. I would blame my alloy but the older mold works fine with the same alloy (COWW) that works for all my other Lee rifle molds.

I guess I will find out firsthand how Lee customer service deals with the issue, because its not something I can figure out how to correct at home. You can't lap a hole smaller :)

You can always flair the gas checks a little, for 8MM I use a .500 diameter ball bearing.

I predict Lee Precision will make it right.

You're the second guy with an oversized gas check step from Lee so far today. The other guys in Northern Europe.

Just musing...

Call Andy Lee at 262-673-3075 and he will take care of it.

Try setting the gas checks on a metal table(I use my table saw table), set the head of a #8 or maybe it'll take a #10 round head screw into the gas check and tap it lightly with a hammer. I'd be surprised if Lee wouldn't deal with it, but this is an easy solution.

I had a problem with a LEE 7mm mold. I did the screw method also. I took it one step further and screwed the screw into the end of a short piece of dowel. I then just pressed it and the GC against the anvil portion of my vice. It does work, but it is a PITA.

I have the same problem with my Lyman 429 250 Devastator mould. The gas check shank is too large too. I can't beat the accuracy though.

Just as a point of comparison I compared the new boolets with ones from the old mold. Both were .325 at the driving band, but the old mold measured .305 at the shank. The new one measured .310. That's quite a bit of difference.
