This is the first year since he was too young to be the shooter that my 12 year old has been interested in hunting with dad. This has made me very excited to say the least. He tagged along quite a bit when he was 6 or 7 but he lost interest until this year. Last Saturday we had a young 6 point come in and sadly just did not give us a shot. This was the largest of 4 does that came out this afternoon.

The gun was a marlin 30-30. Loaded with Lees 170 grain RF, going around 1900 fps over Rx7. The bullet was cast of air cooled COWW + 1.5% tin. His shot was pretty good , broad side right behind the shoulder and caught the lower half of the heart. Much lower might have been a problem but a very respectable first shot on a deer. The first thing he said after the shot was “Dad my leg is still shaking” so I know he was pumped up.

The deer ran about 60-70 yard with a better than average blood trail. We even had some blood spray on trees about knee high.

Congratulations to the young fellow. And to you for getting him started. There can't be enough of that nowadays. He should be hooked for good.
