Thought you guys might appreciate my new purchase. Got a Savage 99. Not a fancy collector, but I already reload 308 and didn't want to have to hunt down new dies or brass, and I especially didn't want to pay for them on top of a new rifle.

Here it is.

Looks like it's in good shape, good score!

Great Find. I've always admired the 99 but never owned one. Might have to change that.

Savage has good reputation for the firearms they build.

Nice! I particularly like the .308 round, ever since uncle Sam let me play with big boy toys and was willing to provide free ammo.

Thanks guys. Anybody know enough to educate me on what particular model 99 it is? I know there are several alphabetical types (99f, 99e, something like that) of model 99's, but I don't know how to classify it.

Nice find! I've owned 4 of them in 308. the last one I still have, but havent seen for some time
as it is going through a complete custom rebuild.
you will be hard pressed to find a better carrying & handling rifle.

for loads, try to find a little slower powder that gives the velocity you want and lower pressures.
All the ones I had, shot good with ball powders but resulted in sticky extracting
and the 99's have a weak extractor to start with.
does this have a tang safety, lever safety, cartridge counter on the side?
Looks like the lever safety and no counter? I'm thinking it might be a G
The blonde wood, and the large for end smacks of later model

Sometime in the 70s I had one just like that one. Gave $125 for it and sold it for the same amount.
In later years I've kicked my butt several times.

Lever safety, no cartridge counter, rubber butt pad, rotary magazine. Does that help?

Oh, and I am curious what kind of work is being done on your rebuild?

Oh, and I am curious what kind of work is being done on your rebuild?

New barrel, all "lines" on the action straightened (purely for looks), all pivot points internal either bushed or new pins made,
trigger job, (the bush and new pins is the secret to a good, reliable & consistent trigger pull),
all new wood, cartridge counter window is being added, still looking for a tang site for the rear,
Lever tightened up. Imagine a complete custom Mauser 98 build, but only done to a 99 Savage :)
Only trouble is I have a 308 barrel, but have been infected by the 358 Win virus, :(

I'd love to see it when it's finished. I hope you will post, and feel free to PM me if I happen to miss the post. I don't read every post every day like some people seem to.

As far as getting a 358 goes, there is no reason you can't get another 99.

I dunno what you paid for yours. but around here anymore, $650 is a good deal for a beater :(
unless you luck into one.
for me the holy grail 99 is a 38-55, last one I saw sold for over 4000 bucks :0

photo of my first kill with the current 99 in .308- 275 yards shot :)

Is that one with the birch stocks? I think they called it the 99E. I have a .308 one, good rifle. As I understand it, the E models were economy ones, hardwood stocks, no cartridge counter and they still had the trigger safety after other 99 models went to the tang safety, I think to use up existing stock of parts. I like mine and it is a good shooter and hunting rifle (t's the one in my avatar). I have three others and another on the way, but the .308 is probably the most useful one.
