Someone sent me an internet rumor today, it said that the last lead smelting plant in the US had shut down. Has anybody else heard this, or is it just another bit of "creative writing" so prevelant on the internet? If it's true, that should send the horders into a frenzy!

It's true. The EPA kept upping the pollution standards until they couldn't meet them. The "do gooders" are killing this country, job by job.

We're in a sorry state in these United States. Now, we will be buying lead from third world countries who have NO standards so, in effect, we are damaging the environment by banning a lead mine that had FAR cleaner practices than where we will be buying.

There are several threads already discussing this topic.
Here's one.....

however: http://sierrabullets.wordpress.com/2013/11/01/sierra-responds-how-will-the-closure-of-the-lead-smelting-plant-affect-sierra-bullets/ I know, they make j-words but if you read it it explains why it should not affect the availability of lead in the future.

No! Not Doe Run! That would mean that all the lead in the country would vaporize instantly. Ammo prices will rise faster than the national debt!

Hmmm. 22LR still scarce so how is this going to affect that restocking? I heard the primary source for commercial bullet lead is recycled batteries (unconfirmed) so looking the lead mine and Doe Run would cause those items to skyrocket in cost. That may make recycliing the lead into batteries more reasonable than using it for bullets. Either way, not good for us.

true on the 22 LR here also ,but on Gun talk Tom said it wasn't anything to sweat. He said we inport most our lead and that we shouldn't see any change.

I can't find any ammo so I think it already has started to vaporize!

Why is everyone hunting a reason to panic? The Doe Run plant recieved government money over the last 30 years to help them get their facility up to standards. They didn't do it. They are shutting down because there isn't a sufficient market for their product. The rumors and conspiracy theories refuse to die.

As far as imported ammunition goes, a lot of "American" ammo is repackaged foreign stuff. Wichester USA (white box) is made by PPU. Some remington is produced by Wolf.

From the Truth About Guns:

The closure of the last primary lead smelting plant in the United States in Herculaneum, Missouri will not have any noticeable effect on ammunition supplies or prices, NSSF and ammunition manufacturers say. Why are they pulling a Clark Gable-like “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn?” Because the U.S. ammunition industry has reached a recycling milestone that even patchouli-scented, free-range organic vegan Birkenstock Bolsheviks can only dream of: they use nearly 100% recycled lead .

Lead is primarily used in batteries and is MASSIVELY recycled. This will make only a very small dent,
and we will import a bit more lead from China. Not a good thing for jobs in SE Missouri, but for casters,
a non-event at least in the short run, like the next 10 yrs. at least.

Batteries yield 98% return when processed by PROFESSIONAL recyclers! Do not do it yourself!

And, as been stated oh...so many times  in threads too numerous to count..............it will NOT impact the price of your precious lead.

When is this madness about news that has been around since 2010 gonna end?

Dang good question!

I refuse to panic. Some people must need a bit more foil on their heads.....
