Picked up a bunch of old dies. Some are in good shape, some are not. Most all have some surface rust, and some have some heavy rust on them. Some have all their parts while alot are missing parts. Dies are for just about everything from 22 rem jet to 458 win mag.

Just wondering if there is a market for these?

Photographing and cataloging that should be a perfect project to keep a pre-teen out of trouble over Christmas break.

That's kinda what I was thinking...

I have no time to complete such a task. So I guess they will be going up for sale...

Man, the anal, cataloging side of me wishes you weren't seven hours away.
I'd sort them just to see what was there.

I once got a box of all the cards from a casino party. At the time my kids were about four and seven. We sorted all the cards by back color, then back pattern, then suits. Then we put them back into decks. Hours of good time for me and learning time for them as they learned to see the differences. They got to keep a couple of decks each and were thrilled.

HOLY COW! That is going to be a big job, but of course there is a market.

The trick will be to clean out the interior rust and then put together caliber sets that are
useable, then accurately describe each set. That will be the big job that I mentioned above.

I have bought several lots of old dies, cleaned them up and sold them on eBay. They all sold at a good profit.

Sounds like a winter shop project. Put them up for sale--I need something to keep me out of the poolhall.
Thanks Bear

It is a daunting project....but if you are not in a hurry and winter is cold enough you could really make some members happy....a little cleaning and grouping by caliber...there is always new members and ol' guys that will adopt orphaned dies....IMHO....Merry Christmas....dont let the project over stress you!

Thanks for the kind words Paul! I am no stranger to sorting/cleaning/inspecting LARGE amounts of dies LOL! Stress??? Aww, heck no! I get plenty of that at work everyday! Hope you and all the other members on here have a Merry Christmas too!

I've heard evaporust will clean rusty item really well. Some may be worth doing some lapping & polishing on, but you can probably build a number of die sets and resell them once they're clean. Hopefully you don't have a lot invested in them.

I have Evaporust on hand and have used it quite a bit in the past on dies, molds, etc. It does work well. I hope I didn't overpay for them LOL! What would you have given for the lot? Just curious.

Hey Coyote don't forget a lot of us are setting up 4 hole turret presses and we want to separate the seating/crimping station for our oversized cast boolits. Lets say you have the usual 3 die pistol dies...you need either another crimp die or another seating die. Either one actually...it doesn't matter. Station #1 is resize/de-prime/re-prime....Station #2 is expand/powder thru. Station #3 is seat. Station #4 is crimp/taper crimp. So even the broken sets have a value. I got mine off of DeltaEnterprise (great feller!) and though a little rusty I just dropped them in some rust remover then ran them thru the tumbler. There's a bit of pitting on the outside...and I don't care. Spun some steel wool inside to polish them a bit and they work just dandy. For about the price of 1 new die I got (I think...?) 4 dies. Sell 'em as is! Audie....the frugal Oldfart..

Call them, " vintage ", price them at a really high price, list them on E-bay and stand back to see how many will fight over them.
After seeing some of the stuff sold on that site I truely believe you can sell anything.

Quantity matters.
For ten to fifty dies, my max is ~$3.00 each. At auction I'd hope to get a lot like that for about $250, but it wouldn't surprise me, or annoy me, to loose it to someone bidding $1000.

Good luck what ever you do with them.

I wouldn't mind a few large die bodies if they are 7/8-14 threads with a 1/2-20 center hole in the top..any shape is fine as I have a sandblasted.

Looking for cheap bodies to make my own M dies. I can turn them myself but these would save time.

Absolutely there is a market.
There may be a bit of work identifying what you have but it can all be sold.

I would be interested on old black powder dies, trim dies, forming dies and really odd balls.
