so as some know here I started looking at cast bullets with powder coating for hunting about 7 months ago.. had no previous cast experience except for pure lead for muzzleloaders ..
so let me say again Thanks to everyone here for the knowledge imparted to me by you fine folks
so here goes ..
4 first today for me
1 300 Blackout (SBR 10" barrel) deer harvest
2 Leupold firedot comes thru for the win
3 NC legal suppressor harvest ( just became legal fior suppressors this year in N.C.)
4 and the best of all ....Mil hec 159 FN 98% COWW 2% HSB Powdercoated and running a whole 1500 FPS

It was a drizzly evening and damp morning .. 51 degrees and just at daylight foggy
I look across the field and see what I make out at first to be a coyote then as eyes focus its a 6 point buck (all I see at this point is horns )
line up and pull the trigger
he makes a stumble then takes 3 bounds toward the woods
hearing what sounds like a crash I climb down from the stand and head home to undress and get the 4 wheeler .
head back across the field and he is laying 35 yds from the impact
Absolutely could not believe the damage to the right side (entry wound) left side exit

Very nice...I am hoping to bag my first deer with a CB from my Mauser. Not successful yet, but am always encouraged when others do! How do you like the 300?

Nice kill. One heck of a wound channel. Good Eats!

the 300 has become one of my favorite.. especially now :)
so many different weights you can shoot .. and runs perfectly suppressed

I'd say that the "damage" was caused by an extended bleedout time. Deer didn't die immediately, so lots of internal bleeding into the area surrounding the wound. Much of it can probably be removed by scaping. I get the same often when hunting with .44s. Good reason to let the deer remain undisturbed for a longish time!

Looks like the load did the job. 35 yds. is about as good as it gets for killing. Unless you hit allot of bone and or spinal cord.

The blood is just what happens in the way the bullet hit and comes apart, pushes the blood and hide. Bullet is trying to pass the tough Hide and pulls, in this case the flank, you get this type of damage.

Man, there's a lot of trauma to that deer, I think
l would try a neck shot in the future with that gun.
At least we know the Blackout makes a good short range swatter.

Congrats. Ain't the 300 blk great. That the general assembly passed that gov McCrory signed makes for soem fun hunting.

Wait till you get the itch to try it subsonic:mrgreen: If you are close I would gladly send or give you a few of my sub loads to try

So there was no extended bleed time
deer was dead within 1 minute and was pulling him on the 4 wheeler within 10
Bullet was a flat nose 312 159 gr fn powdercoated sized to 311
having a hard time explaining the entry damage myself. it did centerpunch a rib on entry and nice hole thru the lungs
yes very happy we can use suppressors now
good on 230 and 247 gr bullets. really wanted to see what the 159's would do
thanks to all for the responses

Good luck to you as well ..
we are getting overrun with coyotes and the last 3 years I have seen less and less deer..
have hunted more this year than ever before and seen much less deer .. so its down to shooting cull bucks and does for meat

That's just blood, not blood-shot meat. The meat underneath is fine. My muzzleloader muley looked much the same, meat not damaged at all.

That is a great report. I had been thinking of hunting with my SLR95 with 154gr soft points, should be similar to this. Thank you.

I have perused the 300 blackout information, and this is making it even more irresistible.

Thats correct .. If you increase picture size you will see a perfect hole in the right and same on left side .. no true meat damage ...it was a clean thru and thru..
But I was taken back at all the blood soaked ( pooled) layer between the skin and meat .. as I said he was down and dead within 1 minute and probably less than that.. took me about 5 to climb out of the stand and get to him..
then 10 minutes to go to the house and get the 4 wheeler and back to him
he was laying on his left side and there is really no major blood pooling on that side .. this is what confuses me..
unless this was caused by my dragging him up on the 4 wheeler twice on the right side..(got him up once and forgot to get the straps off the rack first so dummy me sides him completely off trying to unhook them)

I like the blackout for several reasons ..
its real easy to convert 223 to blackout .. no special dies needed to convert.. no need to fireform either ..If you are going to do a lot of brass a HF mini chopsaw and a 300 clamp help speed up the process and only cost about $75.00 total may less if you catch a good coupon from HF.. I started with a hacksaw and did just fine for a while ..
I can go anywhere from 110 gr to 247 Gr projectiles
it functions 100% in subsonic modes
its just fun to shoot with almost no recoil
now subsonic I would probably limit deer shots to about 75 yds and full power to around 200 yds ..
These are MY self imposted limits only

Congrats on the buck, i know deer have been scarce this year for alot of us. i have a question regarding the powder coat. can you powder coat a bullet then resize it? i want to powder coat some .309 boolits but will the powder coat add thickness? i need to do more research.

yes I powdercoat then resize . never had an issue with the coat coming off resizing
I even tried once to cast 458 bullets, powdercoat to 4595 then resized down to 454 .. it worked fine and they shot very well
