I found this bullet and half cartridge partially buried over the weekend in west Texas. It was uncovered by a recent heavy rain, and I was looking on the ground as arrow heads sometimes appear after a rain. The area was near the San Saba river , and a spot known locally by long time ranchers as a place where Texas Rangers used to camp. The photos show it from a couple angles, and I placed a .45 long colt next to it for additional reference. I believe it is .45 cal, but anyway to determine anything else ? 45-70 ?
There was mud in the end, and as it dried and fell out, it exposed the interior behind the bullet. There in an indention in something that looks grey and soft (not the lead - wad or powder ? ) I know this is a long shot, just wondering if anyone has any clue, or can offer anything from what is shown. It has me intrigued.
Thanks !

That looks like a hollow base cast lead bullet. If you can measure the diameter directly in front of the case you might be a better idea of the caliber.
Looks like a 45 colt. Could be a 44-90 44-60 or something else too.

I'm with Don. I think 45/70. That is probably a 400 - 450 grain bullet and the case looks like it is slightly tapered as well.

Not sure the weight in grains. I will work on that.
Any thoughts of it being a 577 Snider ?

Looks to me like a .45-70 carbine round.

Does it look to you like it's almost .6"?
From this end it looks like it's way under 1/2" so the 45-70 would be my best guess also.

Without measurements you can not be sure, but I would say it is a 45-70 with 405 grain boolit. Here are some rounds to compare with yours. It looks like the loaded rounds here, and the hollow base matches the one I have here also.

Good find. It is a thrill to find something that has not been touched in generations, and wonder how it got there.

Thanks CanoeRoller ! That looks very similar , and makes sense. I agree, would love to know the rest of the story. Can only imagine.
