Lyman 225415 confusion????

OK fellas, I am loading the NOE 226-45 GC in a 22 Hornet and was cross checking loads last night. Lyman 46th and 47th show 225415 at 49 Gr., Lyman 48th and 49th show 55 Gr.Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook it is 45 Gr. All show the same loads and velocity's. Has anyone seen any other bullet weight variations for different molds?

First off, there is also a difference between the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 3rd and 4th editions. They are 30 some years apart so it would not be unusual to have some changes. The data was probably prepared with those molds available at the time.

Second, use current load data.

I have two molds for the 225415. One has a small flat and the other has a large flat. Both shoot really well even though the weights are about 2 grains different.

Other variations? Lyman 358242 is in two weights, and varies within the heavier weights by several grains. Plus, it has morphed from 358242 to 356242.
Is this a big problem, no. Work up your load for each bullet and go have some fun. Dusty

I always check two or three manuals before loading and the weight difference just caught my eye.

Lyman change there cutting cherries as required and a degree of licence is taken between cuts. This photos shows two boolits; 225415 and 225462. Note the variations.

Frankly, I cannot, for the life of me, understand why they change bullet shapes and don't change numbers. Quite often there is a material change that can cause problems for people that shouldn't happen. It is just a sorry failure to apply simple quality control checks. Way back when, Elmer Keith complained of this very fact regarding his bullet designs. It has been happening at Lyman for a VERY long time through several different Company management teams.

We could go through many different designs that exhibit the same problems. I was trained as a machinist and if I had turned in work that was so sloppy regarding design changes I would have been canned, and rightfully so.
