I recently picked up a cast iron pot that has been rigged with the heating element on the inside. I haven't tried it out yet and wanted to make sure that this setup makes sense. I am planning to use this strictly for casting pure lead for my muzzle loaders. Any suggestions?

On the same line as the "electric" ladle...except no spout.

Just don't do what I did and allow the element to glow red since it had hot zones that were not immersed in and directly heating the lead. Fill the pot with what you want to melt before you light it up.
I had a hot spot that failed and since Magma no longer supplies the element, I was faced with either buying a straight tubular element and custom bending it to fit or building a whole new pot. I chose the latter since Magma now puts their heating elements in the baseplate of the furnace and I have the capability to build.
If you want to follow what I'm doing on my Bullet master-type furnace, here's the link - http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?221477-Bullet-master-type-furnace
Some heaters are relatively easy to bend but I needed a 7" no-heat zone at each end but I couldn't find a 50" straight element with that. They all have only about 2" of no-heat zones so I totally redesigned my project.

It looks like one that Lyman used to sell. Conceptually it is identical.

Its dangerous send it to me right away so you don't get burned by the exposed element.
