I have maxi ball molds for most of my rifles but always liked the Hornady great plains bullet as well..I thought about trying the lyman version but to be honest in my research Ive read so many conflicting comments about it that Im kinda shy of shelling out $60+ for it..Any of you guys care to weigh in on it lyman great plains mold? Thanks for your time.

The one I have in .54 shoots great; with the bigger charges. In a Renegade, 80gr of geox was starting load and it shot about a 4 inch group at 75 yards. 90gr was better and 100gr was best. I couldn't enjoy the recoil at 100gr. I might have a few .54's left if you want to try some out.

I wouldent mind at all. Id be happy to pay for a few or trade you some maxi balls..Thanks

My TC .54 shot it under 2" at 50 but with 80g of powder recoil was more than I liked.I like their .50 GP and shoot it often.

is your great plains rifle a 1/66 twist or a 1/32 twist. i may have missed that but it would be helpful in figureing what to shoot. also with out looking back at the original post was it also a .50cal?

I had a 50 cal Lyman plains mould. It was a steaming pile of crud. It was the worst mould I have ever made bullets with. I tried them every way I could I even tried to paper patch them. Here are some 50 yard targets.

Here are some Lee REAL targets.

It ain't too tough to figure out which is a better bullet. I wouldn't shoot them at carp in the river. Don't waste your money on a Lyman Plains bullet. I sent mine back to them. I told them that the mould was supposed to be .508 and it was .503. I thought it was undersized. Lyman said it was within spec and there was nothing they could do. I got rid of it and went on. Ron

I have the Lyman Plains converted to Hpoint .( The Hornady has a hollow base the Lyman does not) Both shoot the same for me in the TC Hawkens , I use a felt under the Lyman

If you can't enough to try out, I have a few of the REALs (both sizes), the Buffalo Bullet GP HP HB, Buffalo Bullet Maxi, and Lyman/TC Maxi.

Like many muzzleloading tinkerers, I tried some of the conicals when they first came out as competition with the original T/C basic Maxi-- including the Lyman, Lee REAL and Hornady swaged versions. Most testing was done in an original T/C 50 cal 48" twist rifle using a fiber card base wad and various charges of real blackpowder.

Only the Lee REAL seemed to show some potential for accuracy and repeatability. The largest issue I have with the REAL is the tapered base that is not conducive to straight or easy starting. Seems they always want to cant sideways when first entering the bore and starting past the first drive band. All the others, easy starting or not, never yielded the accuracy of the T/C Max or REAL.

Been a long time ago so can't remember the exact details, but none equaled the original Maxi for ease of loading and accuracy. Plus, one or two of them tended to lead the bore badly. I wouldn't hazard a guess as to why any particular conical works or doesn't work in any particular rifle. In the end, I target plink with the Lee REALs once in a while but my go-to conical in the 50 cal 48" twist rifle remains the original T/C Maxi. The only exception for the 45, 50 and 54 cals is the Lyman 533476 54 cal Minié in a Mississippi rifle- a combination that's exceptionally accurate.
