View Full Version : Fold crimp vs Roll crimp on buckshot loads

Would a roll crimp be better for buckshot loads - being able to adjust the crimp height easier?

Are there any advantages to using a roll crimp - velocity, pressure?

Some feel that a roll crimp offers more resistance than a star crimp, allowing more pressure buildup before unfolding, sort of like a good crimp on a magnum handgun cartridge. This might translate into slightly higher velocities, certainly more consistent ones. I don't think there is any significant increase in pressures. I certainly would try to find some good data for roll crimped shells. The roll crimp might help with slow burning powders, especially in colder temperatures. Plus you use a little less of the case mouth, allowing additional space for powder, wadding or shot if desired.

Newbie question:

Roll crimp and fold crimp not interchangeable in most circumstances?

Hello Blair, I personally have been trying to change a few things the way we load slugs, even tho I have two drill presses all set up for 12 & 20 ga roll crimp, I have totally stopped using the roll crimp.

The fold crimp offers more resistance than roll crimp, besides you do not need a overshot card that might mess up the pattern by being in the flight path.

Always start low and gradually come up with the charge and the crimp of your choice, I prefer fold crimp!

Best of luck and keep us posted.

I use a folded crimp on 10 , 12 , 16 and 20 gauge buckshot reloads and they've all worked well but the 20's have not been the prettiest !

Yes, roll crimp shells have the maximum available space for buckshot pellets. This allows a choke friendly two per layer pellet stack. I load high performance buckshot rounds for deer hunting and demand tight patterns. Roll crimps and overshot wads have not shown any negative effect on buckshot patterning in my testing. One of my favorite conventional 2.75" buckshot roll crimp loads has eight layers of two pellets each. This 2.75" 16 x .30" pellet roll crimp load will fit perfectly into 3 inch hulls with a fold crimp.

Thank you!

High performance buckshot loads is what I'm looking for.
