I took my new to me (all matching with bayonet) 1945 BSA No5Mk1 to the range, it shot pretty good with nothing done to it.
I wanted to bed the rifle to see if I could improve accuracy. After I took it apart, I noticed the surfaces where the receiver and wood mate up had shrunk a bit in a couple areas.
Cardboard shims were greased and applied to the wood where the receiver mates up to the wood. Then a shim was added to the wood under the knoxform and the king screw.
The site that had the bedding instructions said to free float the barrel, I did a bit of sanding as the barrel touched the channel a bit tighter than it should.
The No5 was cinched up and blue loctite was added to the king screw, now for it to set up and tomorow it will be tested for accuracy.
The No5 is just another in the long line of the Enfield addiction........

The number 1 thing I found to make my BSA No5 Mk1 shoot accurately was good loads. I make neck-sized fireformed reloads using Hornady's 174 grain round nose soft point bullets and 40-42 grains of Reloder15 using Lee's factory crimp to lightly crimp the bullet seated to just touch the rifling leade. This combination made a believer out of me since it seems to shoot accurately in all of my Lee Enfields using brass designated to the gun and bullets custom seated to just kiss the rifling. The Hornady 174 grain round nose is .312" diameter not the .3105 to .311" pf the other bullet manufacturers. It also has a soft jacket material and seems to slug-up to fill the rifling. Being flat base it has a lot of bearing surface as well. The "Jungle Carbine" can be punishing with full-power loads but this load is not too bad. I have a "slip-on" recoil pad fitted on mine and that helps the shooter (me) to not flinch in anticipation of the recoil.

I have only shot Hornady 150 and 174 RN bullets out of my JC, I could hunt with it as is, but I just wanted to see if the accurizing method would work. I accurized my No1MK111 and got much improved accuracy, my No4Mk1 improved with just bedding around the king screw.
The No5Mk1 got the full treatment, kingscrew, receiver and barrel knox.
If it doesn't work, it's easily removed.

The accurizing on the No5Mk1 went well, all I had to do was put a couple of cardboard shims on the flats of the receiver on each side of the trigger.
I had placed shims under the barrel knox and the king screw, these opened up the group and were quickly removed leaving only the shims by the trigger.
The top wood was touching the barrel in a couple spots, 5 minutes and a bit of emery cloth fixed that problem.
I shot at 55 yds, the 174 Sierra Matchkings did the best at 3/4 of an inch and shot a nice triangular group.

Finally figured out how to upload photo's - use photobucket. The files are the same size but for some reason I can't upload direct off my PC because the files are too big!? anyway, here they are.

The most accurate milsurp rifle i have ever owned and one of the most accurate rifles i have owned period was a enfied. Got it ar a gunshow for $25 since bubba had got ahold od it and put a cheap synthetic stock on it, and a ugly scope mount, but that rifle just plain shor good. Didnt matter. If you could cram it in that chamber it would shoot sub MOA and usually all touching. I really miss that rifle as a truck gun.
