Round hockey puck type ingots marked PLP...what's PLP mean? Just started casting and I used these believing its pure lead. Casting Lee 320 REAL and round ball for a 50 Hawken. First time went very well. Going to get a 38/357 & 44 Mag mould next. Nice forum here!

For standard boolits, you will need 1-2% tin to allow good mold fill out.

Good luck finding what PLP mans!

Pure Lead for People?
Plus Lead Plus??
who really knows, I've got about a hundred ingots all with a P cast into them. I always figured it was "pure" never checked them or used any, just the other day on fleabay I found the mould they were cast in, the P was for the mould maker:roll:

Go to a scrap yard. I have experienced that they have been willing to use their hand analyzer to determine what the alloy content is.

Does it scratch easily with a thumbnail? Very rough test, but I've found "pure" lead indents fairly easily, whereas with the range scrap I have my thumbnail just slides over it! That probably matters more than what PLP stands for (although I suppose it would be nice to know).

Thanks. It does scratch easy. All thud when dropped on a steel deck. Guess I'll pickup a hardness tester.

I have NO answers to the OP's question.
BUT a P.O.I.
The scientific chemical name for our lead is "Plumbum" .The symbol is Pb.

I'd bet on Soft Lead. It's Plumbers Lead People, the hockey puck is a dead give away.

Hey, I might even be right!

If you live on the West Coast ... Utility companies used round ingots to put in the pots when they sweated joints. In Oregon, there is a utility ... Pacific Light & Power (PLP) that could have been stamped when they were shipped from the smelter

In Virginia there is Potomac Light & Power ... so my guess your hockey pucks came from some utility company that doesn't sweat joints anymore and scrapped their ingots or an employee pocketed a few. My source for flux comes from a utility company, boxes of it

When you get your hardness tester, you will probably find they will be Bhn 5
