I just acquired this little gem. Mauser Model 1871 Carbine in 11X60R, single shot made in 1884. Over all good condition with very good bore. Marked Spandau. All matching numbers except for two screws.

A funny story about this one. Last month I was at my monthly gun club meeting and I swapped a guy for some lead alloy that he had. In the box were a bunch of cast boolits so I asked him what they were. He said they were .43 Mauser that he cast for his sons rifle, but that his son had sold the rifle and did not need them. Later that evening I saw his son and we got to talking. Turns out he still had some loaded ammo, some brass, reloading dies and a boolit mold. We got to jawing and he asked where he might sell the stuff. At first I said Cast Boolits and then I said darn it I wished I had a .43 Mauser and joked about buying the stuff and then acquiring a rifle. So he says to make him an offer, any offer and I says $100 and he goes; Deal. We shook hands. It was a good deal, except that I had no rifle to fit it. So guess what I did?

Check the chamber for pitting on that 1871. On mine the chamber looked ok, till I fired a 43 mauser
shell in it. The chamber was pitted enought that the case wouldn't eject. I had to rechamber mine
to 45/70. I had to have the bolt face built up and machined for the 45/70 case. Lucked out finding
a gunsmith that could fix it. I just fire form 45/70 shells and just neck size. The .458 boolits work
in the .454 dia bore ok. Will have to trim the brass back about 1/8 in, Like the old 45/60 win case.
Hopefully your 1871 will be ok. If you have any problems, PM me and I can put you in touch with
the gunsmith that fixed mine.

.............I have a M71 Infantry rifle that shoots like a house afire. All my brass is Bertram and yes it's kind of spendy. However having previously the need to feed a MkIV 577/450 Martini, the 43 Mauser brass price was like a bargain 8-). In my M71 one of the best boolits I found was the Lyman 457121-PH. This is a 470 gr design intended for the muzzle loading Whitworth rifle. It drops from the mould at about .457" so I lube-size in a .457" Lyman die and then run it up through a Lee .452" size die. In 2000 at the first Nevada Cast Boolit Shoot at Topaz Lake, NV I shot it in a heavy wind blowing straight across the range. After lobbing several rounds at a 18" x 24" steel plate at 600 yards I finally figured out how far into the wind to hold and managed to hit it several times!
