A few days ago I filled my last tag for Idaho. We had a great season this year and I met a bunch of new friends.

We hunting hunting private land and I was sitting on a large boulder watching a valley that had been logged a few years ago. I seen this buck once but he was going straight away from my position.I continued to watch him until he went out of sight. In between I had saw a few smaller bucks and doe's but nothing I wanted to take yet.

A few minutes goes by and here he comes again pushing a doe across the valley headed right towards me. I get all setup and calm myself down.He pauses in the opening and I let him have it. He runs out of sight and I wait about half an hour until I head over and cut blood. He ran 111 yards and piled up. That little 6.5x55mm even at long range kills all out of proportion to its paper ballistics. The 125 grain partition went through both sides and exited. Here is some pics, my two bucks are on the left of the lineup.

Very nice bucks & using one of the all time great calibers for deer. The 125 Partition is a great bullet for the old Swede, ya done good!

I'm surprised he ran so far. The 130gr Accubond is another great 6.5mm bullet. I've used both the 125 PT and 130 Accubond out of a 260 Rem and 6.5/270 JDJ and they did really well. Great bucks! What rifle is the 6.5 Swede?

I think the only reason he ran so far was that the shot was at 500 yards. When they are closer they do not run far at all.I have killed two elk with this caliber and they have not went over 50 yards.Hit them right and they dont run far at all.The rifle is a tikka t3 hunter.I use it for my woods rifle and as a back up long range deer killer. He was at the farthest I was willing to shoot with that rifle.

I have thought about switching to a 140 grain berger VLD but since I hunt elk in the timber with it I have stayed with the partitions.I use the VLD exclusively in my 300 winchester for long range stuff. The partition in my swede runs out of velocity to expand at around 550 yards but the berger will expand at a much lower velocity.

I've used the 140gr Berger Hunting VLD on a doe and a hog out of a 260 Rem in a 15" Encore pistol. Muzzle velocity was right at 2400 fps and both shots were under 75 yards and they did really well. Good expansion and they exited on both animals, hitting at least one shoulder. The Partition will reliably expand down to 1800 fps or a little less. I didn't think the Berger's would do that well at anything under 2000 fps. Do you have some experience with them? The Accubond will expand reliably down to 1800 fps too. The new Longe Range Accubonds supposedly expand down to 1400 fps. I think the expansion part is a moot point below a certain fps when it comes to long range shots for me because I don't think big game should be shot beyond 400 yards. But, hey, that's just me.

Very nice deer. I really like the 6.5mm. We are stuck locally here with shotguns or muzzleloaders. At least I get out with my smokepoles.
