I've wanted one of these molds for a long time ( IDEAL 323471-- 8 mm Mauser Mold ) you just don't see this particular mold in the condition this one is in very often. This one appeared in Swappin & Selling and I bought it.

I needed .325 as an " as cast " diameter from the mold. My rifle really likes a .325 " diameter cast bullet. I got lucky on this one, it cast at .326" ( Those old IDEAL molds are real gems ! ! ) . So, I'll be sizing to .325". ( my bore is .324 " )

I'll be shooting some of these in a few days. I hope that it shoots well in my 8 X 57 mm ?

I cleaned the mold with brake cleaner and lightly sooted with a butane lighter. Started making great bullets almost immediately.

I can see why ! Good shooting .

The 8 mm gets looked over in this modern
day of " magnum mania ."

I think that the 8 X 57 mm is still a great cartridge. Any GI that was on Utah or Omaha beeches will tell you it is very deadly.

Ben,
Nice mould, boolits, and rifle.

Our boolit casting experiences would be much less frustrating if all of our moulds performed as well as those old Ideals.

Ben

The old IDEAL's are dear to me. The new Lyman's, now that's another story entirely.

I shoot that one one in a couple Turks and it does well.Odd thing is the 323378 Looong nose bullet shoots better.Undersized nose and only casting .323 you would think it would be rotten.

That's the kind of logic that makes the game maddening.

Ben that is a very nice old rifle you have there. On the subject of 8mm moulds, you have a real gem. Looks to cast good boolits too. My 8x57 slugs at .319 if I recall correctly. I have it setting in the living room as I type this because it is going with me in the morning after a good eating doe. If I am successful I will be crowing about it you can bet. I will be interested in how yours shoots.

About 35 years ago I bought this mold, NIB, for $20. I shot a lot of them cast old WW+1% tin pushing 2000fps out of a Remington 8MMMag for five or six years.

Probably was a good killer at that velocity ?

You figure you got your $20 investment out of that mold ?

If you shoot much 8x57 you will come to love that bullet. I also have the 323471 except mine is a factory Ideal HP mould. It is probably the best cast bullet for hunting and long range shooting. Most often with the GC seated at the bottom of the neck it fits up perfectly in the long milsurp throats. I also size mine at .325. If I don't want the HP I simply drop a BB into the cavity which plugs the hole and gives a sort of "bronze tip" bullet. It has been extremely accurate in every M98 8x57 I've shot it in, especially at longer ranges. It has about the highest BC of most any cast bullet. It is and excellent killer on big game.

Larry :

OOHHH- - - , that HP is nice.

I realize that it is hard to say " That particular cast bullet just looks like it would be accurate".

However, that has always been my opinion about the 323471 mold. I'd always wanted one. Catch is, you don't see dozens of these laying on tables at gun shows.

I'm very lucky to have this IDEAL mold !

Knowing me, this one with end up being sent to Erik soon for similar treatment.

The 323471 reminds me of the 311467 with a longer nose for the 471' and a front drive band added.

Thanks,
Ben

Nice design, and I tend to agree with the "looks like it should be accurate".
I think Loverin broke the code and it is a pity that nobody other than the
custom makers are doing his designs any more. I think more folks would
be happy if they did.

Considering it was my 1st day out with the newly modified rifle, and also not knowing which loads the rifle would like, I was impressed with this group.

I have one of these molds and have used for the 303 as well.

They soot lights out in both, but when squeezing them down they do not have much of a lube groove left.

I really like 2500+ lube.

Ben,

Is it possible to get a sample boolit or two from that mold? I would gladly pay for em, I have an old M48 that I am using the Lee 329-205 and would like to see if I should look for that mold as well.

Thank you
Joshua

I will get them going in front of a charge of H -4198 and see what they are capable of.

Ben
01-29-2014, 11:48 AM
I have yet to try H-4198 ( I do have plenty ), but my charge of 12.2 grs. of Russian Unique shoots better than I can right now.

Most likely Alliant Unique would preform in a similar manner.

Ok, I will try them with 16 gr of 2400 as it shoots very well in my M48, I will also try a few at higher velocity with the H -4198 and some dacron filler.

I dont know how many to expect, (beggers cant be choosers after all!) I will make my tests accordingly.

Ben

There are about 30 in the box.

338RemUltraMag

That sounds great, I will place one on the shelf with a tag stating what it is. Then the other 29 will be used for some fun testing. Probably 4 with 16 gr of 2400 and the rest a ladder test with 4198.

Hello Ben,
With loads like the Unique, do you get excessive sooting? In my three mausers, I get bad sooting with Universal, 4227 and 2400 until the load reaches enough pressure. For example, with 2400, 16 grains is very sooty but with 18 grains it is reduced approx. 50%.
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

No, not a problem at all with the Unique load. It leaves a mirror clean bore with minimal carbon on the case necks.

2400 usually won't burn completely until " the pressure builds."

Always been a problem with 2400 in revolver loads. Accurate and reliable but will often times leave unburned powder granules.

I have used this mold for years out of several Mausers. You might try 15 grains of unique for a fun load and about 1500 fps, good accuracy also.
