Hey guys, don't post much on here but read a lot.
Just picked up a used Ruger No 1 H in 458 and am looking for some recommended moulds. I have ordered the 405 gr fn gc rcbs and the 500 gr fn gc. Looking for other moulds to try as well. I know the extra long throat will be an issue, but looking for some fun loads to play with. Currious what others have had good luck with.
Thanks
Brian

My Ruger No. 1 Tropical likes all of my 45-70 molds. I'm particular to the LBT LFN GC at 350 and 400 grains.

I use 3031, shoot out of a 458 Lott Number 1.

Hey there Island Trash, Welcome aboard!
On thing you need to watch for is the length of the throat.
I don't know if the .458 went the same way as the 45/70 in the number 1, but the throat/lead was about zero in my rifle.
I wonder if it was sitting in the pawn shop in almost new condition because it wouldn't chamber some factory ammo.
I had problems with an LBT 355gr bullet because of the profile of the nose, while another mold (different maker) for a 465gr bullet which is also a Wide Flat Nose (WFN) style has zero chambering issues because of a slightly different nose profile.
I'd suggest sizing to start at .460, but slugging your bore to know for sure would be a good idea.

All four Lees, as cast and tumbled, are tight from a 45-70.
