Picked up a 586 no-dash smith. Upon making up some ammo for it,I discovered my .360 boolits i normally load, wont fit in this gun. They wont chamber. Upon experimenting,i discovered that i need .357 sized boolits, then i have no chambering problems.

.357 boolits should work out for me,because the gun has .357 throats, and about .3565 bore..

My question,,,,,Is 586 or any smiths,of this vintage, normally as tight chambered as this one?
You guys ever run into having to use smaller dia boolits to allow chambering?

I've got a newer 586 and I absolutely love it. I'm sure you will love yours too. Shoot it and see how things go.

Mine's a 586 no dash. It accepts .358 boolits just fine....as has every other 38/357 S&W I've ever had....at least a couple dozen, two 586's and four 686's among them.

I have occasionally tried sizing larger, but never saw any advantage over sizing to .358.

I have a fair pile of S&W .38 Spl/.357 Mags, and all have .3580-.3585" throats. Yours is on the tight side for sure.

I have never owned a 586 but I have owned upwards of 50 S&W .38 Special / .357 revolvers.
I have used .358 bullets in every one of them with no problems.

How did you measure the diameter of your .357 bullets?

Being as how it has typical 5 groove smith rifling,,,i measured it with alot of cuss words!!!
But the throats were measured very accurately, with lead slugs,,almost exact .357 dia.

BTW, i shot the gun an hour ago,,very very accurate shooting rig with my ol stand by load.An inch to 1.25 inch groups@ 25 yards,,with no load work up,YUP,,shes gonna stay here!!

My 586 is happy with the .358 diameter boolits. I had a Python that wouldn't chamber the .358s.

Upon further inspection........ ive found out that .358,s will chamber. But, the 360,s (that i load in my marlin rifle) wont.Them was the ones that i thought was .358. Even still,it seems that the gun is tight chambered. Ive shot the 360,s in multiple .357 guns, back along without any troubles.

Okay , curiosity here .... don't mean to spin the thread ... I also have a "no dash" 586 .. as others have said , it is very accurate as I stuff .358 boolits of 158 gr. and 125 gr .. lots of fun a fifty yards plus ...
Question is "no dash" vs dash #'s .... which is more desirable ? or what the preference is...
Saving the factory grips with Hogues installed ...real quality shooter.

Not a simple question to answer, some believe that S&W's quality varied over the years due to things like who owned the company and things of that sort. There is some history here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_&_Wesson

Wiki is also a good place to date a S&W by dash number. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_&_Wesson_Model_586

maybe others will have more specific answers for you...or you can search the web, there are lots of answers out there ;)
Good Luck,
Jon

This is intresting....... i just got done shooting the 586 again. Using the same load.only difference being .357 and .358 size boolits,,the gun has a pronounced like for the .357 size, very obvious when looking at group size on paper. Thinking ill stick with .357 in this one.

I have an old 14 no-dash,that has .357 throats as well. That gun dont care if the boolit is .357,.358,.359,or .360,,it shoots every size, very well.

while im thinkin on it,ive a nother question. This thing has incredible trigger.Havent measured it,but i know its under 2 pounds, very nice.I think somebody was inside this gun and tuned her up. My question,,,,,,,,it has a target trigger.Did these 586,s come with target trigger,or did somebody put it into this gun? Seems odd that it would have wide target trigger, and a standard skinny hammer...

Ive found out from a kind member on here, that this gun dates between 1982-83...

Back in the 80's I had a no dash 686. They were subject to recall due to primer flow back into the firing pin hole. I had it fixed but the problem still would happen time to time with 6.5 Gr. of Unique and a 158 Gr. cast. It also would spit material out of the cylinder gap. I eventually sold it. Over the years I have had one other no dash and also a dash -1. They both would bind up like no other S&W revolvers I have owned and also sent them down the road. Finally found a very nice four inch 686-3 and this one is a peach. From what I have learned over the years is that the -3 and -4 are the most desireable. I have no experience with the 586.

Just my experience.
