Welcome to the madness!
Short answer is no. Search the site for very detailed reasons why.

PLEASE.............DO NOT USE BATTERIES!
There are MANY threads on here from the past asking the same question. Use the search engine.
I believe LASC (sp?) site also has warnings by those that are far more knowledgable than I and will explain the chemistry behind why you NEVER use battery plates.
Clean lead is extremely easy to find at scrap yards. Do not go looking inside batteries!

Battery plates=death wish.
The answer is yes you could use them and no you should never do so short of a zombie apocalypse
I even saw one genius on youtube splitting open batteries with an axe and melting them in an open air kettle and thinking to myself " that's why healthcare costs are out of control and we got obamacare"

the battery plates are too contaminated and there is no safe way at home to decontaminate them, heating them will release lots of bad gases=death
