Anyone heard of the .308 WCF? I saw it in a back issue of handloader, it looks to me kinda like a .32-40, except necked to .30 cal not .32 cal. I'm trying to find some more information about the caliber and where to find dies.

Dan

I know 308WCF is used at times when 308 Winchester is meant. I believe they are interchangable terms for the venerable "308". If you google 308WCF you will find many articles and other references useing it synonomously with 308 Winchester.

308WCF stands for "winchester center fire"

I believe it is akin to calling a 30-30 a 30WCF.

I've looked in Frank Barnes "Cartridges Of The World" 9th edition, and it has no reference to a 308WCF only the 308 Winchester. I've also checked a few old issues of handloaders magazine and found the 308 refered to as both 308 Whinchester and 308WCF.

I believe the are the same cartridge but would be interested if someone had other information to enlighten me.

It has been my understanding that 308 wcf is the standard 308...now it's possible that what they refered to was a 32-20 wcf necked a bit to use 308 bullets instead of 312's. This was at one time sort of common but if your shooting cast a moot point i think.

Is there some reason to NOT think that this is only a TYPO?
30WCF is 30-30.

FWIW I think I have seen some 308 brass marked 308 WCF - been awhile but I know 30 WCF Brass exists - 30-30. jb:???:

I have a box (400 ct.) of bullets in 30 WCF from Bear Creek Supply that are plain-base, molycoat leads which are listed on the box as .310 diameter and measure .3105 with a micrometer. The 30 WCF is a designation for Winchester 30-30. WCF is Winchester Center Fire and could appear on any off brand brass as part of a headstamp (30-30 WCF, .308 WCF, etc.).

fergot about this thread. the cartirdge in question is definitely not a .30-30 or .308 It has a body taper just like the .32-40 I'm going to dig up the magazine when I get home. The article was one done this summer about Inherent Accuracy.

I'm with ya, buddy...

Earlier this year I borrowed a Lyman Cast bullet handbook from a buddy-- an early edition. (I forget which one.) If I remember correctly -and that's a big if- there was an old, obscure cartridge listed, and it was indeed the .308 WCF. Looked something like this:

I don't have that old Lyman book handy to me now, but if someone else has one, they could look it up...?

A .32-20 loaded with .308" bullets is commonly called a .30-20, or .30-20 T/C, as Thompson/Center was the one to make it famous in their Contender. At least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Actually, I'm going to have to retract that statement. I was able to consult the afore mentioned Lyman cast bullet manual...

At the time that I borrowed said Lyman book, it was to gleen cast bullet data for the .358 Winchester. I had frequently seen comparisons between the .348 and .358 Winchester, and how the .358 Winchester was cooked up to replace the .348. So I was surprised to learn of another cartridge very similar to both. This...

...is what I was thinking of, mistakenly remembering it a year later as the .308 WCF.

So Dan, you'll have to dig up the article, because now I, too, am interested in finding out about this .308 WCF...
