Hey guys,

I thought I'd share my rifle with you and ask a question in the process. It is a 1909 Peruvian Mauser in 458 American. The scope is a 1-3X Weaver. It shoots pretty well, and I am very happy with it. I haven't had the chance yet to do a lot of work with it, but it is ready for deer/pig this winter. I currently load a 350 hornady flat point designed for the 450 marlin at an average of 2209 fps. I just last night received my mold for it. It is the Lee 90376 500 grain flat point. I intend to replicate the performance of the original 45-70-500 with it. Both cartridges are shown in the picture below. Right now, I've only tried IMR 4198, but am pleased with it so far. Brass is mostly cut down 300 win mag, but there is some 458 win mag, a few weatherby mags, and a few norma mags in the mix as well.

Being a wildcat, I did a chamber cast, and was a little surprised at the result. The distance from the case mouth to the rifling (I think this is called freebore or maybe leade), is about 2 inches! You can see it in the picture below. Even with the 500 bullet seated way long, it's still an inch short of the rifling. My question is, how do you think this happened? I've wondered how in the process of reaming, that could happen. Also, does it cause anything I need to be worried about? Maybe a lead buildup and eventual high pressure situation? Any thoughts on it are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

No cause to worry if you are getting the accuracy you desire.
Enjoy the gun.
Weatherby also has lots of freebore.
