Is anyone out there loading the Lyman 410459 at 700-900 fps? If so, what powder(s) do you like? Anyone using Trail Boss?

Thanks,

Rusty

Haven't used Trail Boss yet.

My favorite load, one I've been using for 30 years, is 6.7gr SR-7625 (gray can) and a CCI standard LP primer with this bullet. The powder fills the case nearly to the bullet base (much closer than an equivalent load of Unique) and makes a very accurate load that runs ~950fps from a 6 inch barrel and about 900 fps from a 4 inch barrel. I've shot thousands and thousands of these through my M-57 Smiths and they're as tight as the day they left the factory. The cases usually fall from the chambers when the cylinder is opened (some stick due to bullet lube blown back between the case and chamber wall) and the cases get a bit smoky, but that comes off in the tumbler.

Stew

I have not played with the .41 magnum. However, a good friend has one and I have long loaded the .44 magnum from "Mild to Wild".

You can hardly go wrong using Unique for mid-range loads. Just check any loading manual.

Not into Trail Boss but I shoot Lee's 175 SWC and 210 SWCs over 5 gr Bullseye. Out of the 7 1/2" Bisley the 175 runs 850 fps and the 210 830 fps. Quite accurate and pleasant to shoot. The 175 was quite accurate in a M58 also.

I've been using 5-5.5 grains of red dot behind a 41032 for years. It replicates the ballistic of .45 acp ball fairly closely. ymmv

6 gr. 231 works well in that region.

Mike "Duke" Venturino did a write up on a non-magnum 41 in a recent handloader mag. I'm pretty sure he used trailboss. I can look it up for you if you'd like.

The 1960s 210 grain lead police load for the .41 Magnum was loaded with Bullseye, I read long ago.

I shot thousands of those bullets with 9.0 of IMR SR4756. All my 41s just loved it. CB.

4756 is my favorite mid-range powder in the 41, 44, 45. ... felix

What's the deal on the gray can? Is that an old duPont product?

Rusty,

I have used Trail Boss with a 240gr Lee in the 41 mag for about 700fps. It is a great powder for this application. Metering and accuracy of the load was superb. The load data for 41mag is available from IMR/Hogedon on their web site.

Trail Boss 215 GR. Starting load 4.5 = 752 Max load 6.5 = 910

I used the starting load. Would suggest 5.0 and a good crimp so as to try and keep the cases a little cleaner.

Zipdog,

Yes, the "old" (depends on your perspective) duPont product came in 8oz quantities in the same size metal cans you buy quart quantities of paint thinner (and still did under the IMR brand until recently when Hodgdon bought them out), but the new Hodgdon-style 1lb plastic bottles still carry a gray label. The reason I mention the color is to differentiate SR-7625 from SR-4756 (light green can/label), which is much more commonly listed in handgun loads (both have 5, 6 and 7 as common digits). Those of us who are mildly dyslexic and those who are prone to ignoring small details might confuse the two. Fortunately, the manufacturers have had the sense to include label color coding along with the numeric designation.

While I'm not certain that there would be any danger in using 4756 in place of the 7625 load I mention, since my load is quite mild, the results with respect to accuracy and pressure curve would not be the same. My load development was aimed at specific results and I believe these results can only be obtained with SR-7625.

Stew

I use a lot of SR4756 and Unique for my plinking 41 mag loads with the 410459.

I used 7.5 of Unique with the 410459. Never chronographed it, but it shot great in my M57. 9.0 grains caused the groups to open up.

I use Unique for both 240 & 210gr Lee boolits.
7.5 - 8.0 grains is what my Ruger BH likes.

I like Unique at the 7-8 range. (.41's or .44's)

I like HS-6 for a bit more thump.

I found 800X to give more recoil per the work done in my .44's than HS-6 or 2400.

When I go up the power ladder from HS-6 ..... I go straight to 2400 and adjust accordingly.

800X is going to my shotshell endeavors now.

"Skeeter's Load" (7.5 grains of Unique) for the 44 Special/240 grain SWC works well for me in the 41 Magnum using Lyman #410032. It runs about 825 FPS. I just finished a run of about 600 41's with 9.0 grains of Herco and that same boolit. In the 6.5" Blackhawk, it ran 950 FPS--in a friend's M-57 x 4", it goes just under 900 FPS. An all-day load, for sure.
