After church I had a little spare time and decided to do a little shooting. I had some boolits cast in a Lee ctl-312-160 mould. They cast at .3125-.313 and I seated the gc in a Lee 314 push thru sizer and tumble lubed them with straight LLA. I loaded them with 16.0 gr. 2400 in a Lapua case and shot them through a hex receiver Mosin. That was the best group, but the rest of them were just slightly larger. I was pretty happy with it and wanted to share.

I'd be pretty happy also.

Good shooting ! ! What was the distance ?

2400 is one of my all time favorite cast bullet powders in .30 cal. rifles.

16 grs. of 2400 in a .30 cal. rifle is " magical."

The distance was 50 yds. Ben. Shot from a solid rest.

I do my shooting at 200 yards.

nny 184- grain 'D' Ball 1986 averages 4.5" for a series of five, 5-shot groups fired off sandbags from my Finn M24, M28/30 or M39 rifles, so is the benchmark.

NOE #311299 loaded as-cast, without the GC, shot as-cast and unsized, equals this with 13.5 grs. of #2400. A charge of 8.4 grains of Bullseye with #311299 no GC unsized, as-=cast with LLA does just as well.

With GCs 15.4 to 16 grs. of #2400 is the sweet spot which "zings!" 3" or less from My M39 Tikka at 200 yards with 3X Russian PU scope.88825

Awesome group. Need to get some casting done for my old Mosin done too I guess.

That is a sweet combination in the 91/30. I've had similar results.
Nice shooting.

You said it, 2400 is "magical". From .30 carbine to 30-06, and 8mm Mauser and .44 all with cast. I don't know what I'd to without it. Been using it for 40+ years. Yep, good shootin mac60.

Thanks for the kind words. What did Ed Harris call it - "the universal load"? No leading, and cheap to shoot. Gotta love it!

I'm a fan of Red Dot/Promo powder but whatever those can't do 2400 will.

When I compare results from both powders 2400 seems to excell in cases like 8x57 or 30-06 but Red Dot beats it in 7.62x54 and 308 and the like.

I shoot low power loads using scrap lead from pistol range.Distance is 100yrs or less.Goal is economy/accuracy evenly split.

Good shooting there mac60. I shoot the same bullet and load in my M44 with equal results it just a hard load to beat in about any 30 cal. rifle.

I got to enjoy the magical 16gr load of 2400 in my M28-76 for the first time this week with the Lyman 311334, and the heavier NOE 311335 liked 17gr.

What overall length do you seat the Lee 160 grn. boolit to?
I just dummied one up at 2.745 trying to get it close to the rifling had some marks on the nose that makes me think that would be about right. 1936 Finnish Hex reciever. Never shot it yet with anything but shot a R

Thanks! Nice looking round. Looks like it's out to the first lube groove.
Maybe my neck was to large in the first one causing it not to chamber.
My first experience with bottle neck loading.

18 Grains 2400/Lee 175gr RN/WLR/Rem brass = sub moa @ a hundred for 5 shots from a Yugo 48
Great stuff and not position sensitive either.

On the 54r I use the provide crimp groove on the Lee .312" 160 gr. and use a med roll crimp. Case necks were expanded with a 32 S & W long neck expander which worked out better than the standard .311" expander ball on the RCBS dies.

Evidently that works out well in my particular Mosin as I don't think I can get it to shoot much better. 5 shots at 50 yds.

Not all brass is the same thickness I have some 54r brass with much thicker case necks than what I normally shoot. The Max bullet dia. I can easily chamber in my M44 is .314" using Prvi or Winchester/S & B brass. With the other brass if I so desired I can size my bullets to .313" and they chamber fine I just put that brass aside to load J bullets in. Also if you use a roll crimp and get to excessive it will bulge the brass a can cause chambering issues.

Thanks Mike,I was pretty stoked when I shot that first test group and it shot so well. Sometimes you hit thing right off the bat. Of course I have to give the props to Ed Harris for coming up with the Universal load. At some point I what to experiment with higher velocity loads an my paper patch bullets.

Funny thing is - it's the first load I tried with that boolit too.

What kind of velocity are you guys getting with 16 grains of 2400 out of a 91/30 and the ctl-312-160?

I haven't chronoed my loads yet but according to Mr. Harris it should be running somewhere between 1500 and 1600 fps. I'm probably somewhere in the middle since I'm shooting them in a M44 with the shorter barrel.

I have a lot of loads for various rifles that I'm shooting that are perfectly safe but I need to just pick a nice day and set the chronograph up and do a bunch of test.

I started shooting 16gr 2400 with a 311299 in my Finnish Hex Mosin for our military bolt match and loved it. 6-8 months ago I got my 311365 group buy mold, and wanted to see what the Mosin could do on the long range course, so I loaded up the new boolit with 20gr 2400 and sighted in on the 500 yard Ram line. Pure joy knocking one ram over after another at 500 yards using cast!

+1 on the nice looking bullets, what kind of velocity are you getting with the 20 gr. 2400 load?

It's possible you have a Mosin with an oversized bore. That can cause all kinds of problems (accuracy, keyholing, etc). You might want to see if that's the problem. A friend of mine had one with an oversized bore and he ended up getting rid of it. Too many problems.

Please don't beat up on me...I'm old and pitiful...I love the mosins and do alot of mosin shooting with the milsurp light ball 147 grain jwords...I also have just a boat load of .311 jwords in 150-180 grain a buddy gave me...I load with imr 4350 to standard loads...I'd really like to make up some "plinkers" that would be very light recoil for my wife to shoot...I don't cast (I do shoot lots of Missouri's cowboy 12 hard boolits in handguns) so just wondering if anyone makes up powder puff loads using either 2400 (got lots of it for my 357 loading) or any other powder (I got lots of trail boss, unique and universal) to shoot sissy loads with j words....Thanks..

Baja Traveler those are some FINE looking cartridges buddy! I did some more shooting monday and then again yesterday (what would be the right section to post a range report in?). Anyway, here's a target I shot yesterday (50 yds).

89707

Still working on sight adjustment (almost got it!). My eyesight ain't what it used to be, but I think I'm gonna try this one at 100 yds. with the open sights.
