Just beginning to test the NOE 311041 in my Savage 99 in 308 Winchester with 1 in 12" twist. It has a ridiculously long and fat throat that I haven't been able to shoot J'ed in for anything. The 311041 was seated long with COL at 2.7 and sized .312 with an alloy of Lyman #2. The long throat is great for this cast as this long boolit doesn't extend down below the neck. Range was 50 yards. Looking forward to longer range after getting a couple powders in the acceptable range.

Tried Varget and 4350. I heard 4350 wasn't good but I use it in my 7.5 Swiss with good results.

Varget loads 30, 32, and 34 and the groups were .67, 1.2, and 1.14. For some reason I was expecting to go higher than these charges.

Tried IMR 4350 in 39, 41, and 43. The groups were .72, .3, and 1.68. I have since tried the 41 grain load and though not like this .3 one whole group shoots 1/2 groups at the 50 yards. Will do some more testing with charges around the 41 grain load.

Next up will be Rel 7 and 4895. The rifle will shoot a one hole group at 50 yards with a 160 LBT cast with 25 grains of Rel 7.

Any idea what the velocity would be with the 41 grains of 4350 and the 311041 that weighs in at 184?

Any other loads I should try with the this bullet in the 308?

I found IMR4227 to be a good powder for moderate velocity but good accuracy. I can't recall the top end charge off the top of my head but 18 to 22 grs. worked well for me in a Mauser converted to .308 and also in a friend's Savage 99.

It isn't real speedy but it is accurate.

IMR4198 is also a good choice.

If you are looking for higher velocities then larger charges of slower powders are in order.

I have found almost universal success with A-Reloder-7 in almost every rifle in which I have used it.. My 30-30 Ranch Dog load is 24 grains of Re-7. I gave my Savage 99 to a nephew-in-law some years ago but my log shows good accuracy from it and a short barreled 98 Mauser. I have even used Re-7 in the 350 Rem Mag with Remington's old 150 grain .358 jacketed bullet. I will be watching to see how your Savage does with it. I have just received an o3-A3 that is dedicated cast and will be working up loads with the Lee copy of the 311041 and Re-7.

I have made a few assumptions here: Barrel length 22" like my old 99. Your mould drops a heavier boolit than mine by about 10 grains. It's been a few years since I had 4350 in stock but I figure that you are between 2050 and the shy side of 2100 foot seconds with your 41 grain load.

I had a good bit of fun with Winchester's 748 about 10 years back. Now fancy me this???? Why couldn't I get the same performance from Ball C-2??? I was never after bench rest groups but needed a good 2- 2 1/2" group. You might try them?

I've noticed that too. Most every medium caliber, medium velocity, medium case velocity does well with RL7. May not be the optimal powder for that cartridge but it's always worth a look.
