I built up a 22 Hornet super Topper with an old Ruger 1-12 barrel and a shotgun action. But I have never loaded cast in a Hornet. I am thinking about 22 lr to 22 Magnum velocities with hopefully a plain base bullet.

I am sure I am not the first doing this so I would appreciate any suggestions for bullets for this project. I was hoping for a plain base bullet as I am not real axious to fumble with 22 gas checks, say 45 grains or so????

Suggestions anyone ???

NOE is producing the GC version of BRP's 45 gr. mold. BRP made a plain base version also. Both are supposed to shoot very well in a tighter chambered Hornet. You might contact BABore about how they shoot and to see if he has a PB version leftover to sell. Not real sure you can get acceptable accuracy with PB at .22 Mag velocities (~2000fps??), and I haven't tried it with my Hornet. If I were to try this; I think I would start with something resembling the Lyman 225438, or a PB copy of it. It has always reminded me of the profile of a generic .22LR, and I think it would work well for a .22 WRF substitute, if not for the Magnum.

22 gaschecks aren't the most fun thing to handle, but they're not impossible.

I have use the Lyman 225438 (46 grs) with checks, 231 @ 3.4 grs, for close range (50 yds). 5 shot groups @ 3/4 x 3/4" all day long but it goes south real quick @ 100 yds. Savage Model 40.

I have tried a Lee Bator (56 grs), no joy for me there in the Hornet. It is a GC ed bullit to. The check are my home make and Al. Your right they are a pain in the rear but 22 cal. bullits are to for my 66 yr old fingers. Lube is my version of Bullshops lube and is great, hope this helps

I have a pile of .22 PB bullets, but haven't tried them yet. I have, on the other hand, shot a pile of 225438's with much success. Charge weights ranging from 1.8 to 2.2 gr. Bullseye (with small pistol primers) give astonishing groups at 50 yards, and groups that hover around MOA at 100 yds. Granted my rifle is an odd ball- 5.6x35R (Euro version of .22 Hornet) with a .221" groove diameter and 1-8½" twist. I have worked up to 50 grain bullets and up to 4 grains of Universal Clays too with nearly as good results.

I have come to agree with other pundits that using small pistol primers is one of the keys to success with this little cartridge.

I don't find gas checks on .22 bullets to be a PIA. I would recommend a 225438 mold as it'll give you more versatility. Heck, unchecked bullets from this mold give decent accuracy at .22LR velocities too.

The 225438 with no gc shoots well for me in my 22-250 @ 1200.

Harrympope - would you happen to remember what your load was for that 1200f/s 22-250 ?

What kind of shotgun frame did you use for this? Ive been thinking about trying to make a barrel or two for my NEF.
