Been bowhunting a lot...87559
87560
But decided to go burn some powder today. The first pic is 7/8 oz lee loads @ 50 yds off the hood of truck out of IC 28" scoped 870. That's a 10" circle. The first 3 shots highlighted in pink, cold barrel. Look @ #1. Moved elevation up a 6 clicks and shot 3 more highlighted in orange. Look @ #4 (1st shot in group after barrel had cooled some). The third group highlighted in blue but barrel still a little warm. #7 is first shot in that group and the other 2 are with a pretty hot barrel. Hmmmm... #1, 4, and 7 were the first shot in each group. Me flinching or a cool barrel?87561
The 2nd pic is a little confusing. The pink circles are my 10 pellet 00 buck load @ 50 yds out of full choke. The 4 blue circles are the 7/8 slugs @ 100 yds. Why are they high? One would expect some drop since i am on @ 50 yds... The 3 orange marks (one went through almost same hole as earlier group). Are hard cast 7/8 lee slugs, 10% lighter in weight than the pure lead slugs. Tighter group and higher still @ 100 yds which is easier to understand.

Shot some more but was a little punchy. Gonna try to take a deer with the slugs soon after I've satisfied my bowhunting calling.

Hello HogTamer, I watch a lot of Outdoor channel and see the bows they use but would like to know with your bow what speed do you get from your bow, fps?
Looks good, I do not have a bow now, but who knows you just might temp me into it!

Thanks for posting info and pictures. Good to get three pellets in such a group at 50 yards. Not sure if I could hit that target at 100 yards with the Lee Slugs. Going to try 30 grains of Unique with the 7/8 oz slug.

I think that bow looks like a black widow... Prolly pulls about 37 lbs....about 220-250 fps... Of course that is a guess...lol

AJ, that is a recurve bow, 55 lb draw weight @ my draw length. It zips the 550 grain carbon arrows pictured along at about a blazing 185 ft. Per second! Speed is not what kills with a traditional bow, it is shot placement - getting a razor sharp broadhead through a deer's vitals so that it dies by hemorrage, not massive shock or tissue destruction. Both of those animals went no more than 50 yds after complete arrow pass through the lungs, dead in 30 seconds. Alaskan guy is a wry jokester and is pulling my chain a bit (sort of an inside joke about speed and the black widow brand of bow)!! But back to Big lead! It is accuracy above all to me. Like most folks on this forum, anything you can't keep in that 10" circle is just noise, and that's a minimum standard. And compared to my usual hunting equipment these slug loads are a freight train. I can't help but chuckle a bit when folks question the lethality of these slugs we love to load. As Jmortimor pointed out in another thread, the massive retained energy in our shotgun loads often cannot be matched by the large caliber rifles.
