I bought a nickel 58 last year that was pinned and recessed and a 57-1 6" few weeks ago. Still looking to get a pinned and recessed 57 with 4" barrel.

Nice revolver by the way.

The barrel is too short! I carried a 6" Model 57 as my duty gun for many, many years. I never felt under gunned with it on my hip, or in my hand.

Hope this helps.

I carried a 4" Model 58 for several years for my duty gun. I still have it although now and then I wish it had adjustable sights like that nice Model 57 in the OP. Still, the fixed sights shoot to POA with 210gr RCBS cast boolits at 900 to 1,000 fps.

Nice .41s Jerry.

Mine has a few years of holster wear on it, but it (and a Model 65) went a long way to earning my LE retirement stipend. Hard to believe that it was once new and as good looking as all the above .41 magnums. Oh well, it's a tried and true companion now and as the OP says of his, it'll probably go to the grave with me.

I'm sure that it has at least 8K to 10K rounds of the 210 grain "Police Load" (210 grain lead SWC at 900 to 1,000fps) through it and it's still spot on and reliable.

Mmmmm. Love me some 41 mags. I've got a 57 no dash, 57-1, 5 Blackhawks, 1894CCL and 1894S. Love them all and no, none are for sale.

Scharf:

After a long tour of duty your Model 58 still looks very nice. It is obviously a well cared for companion !

It is too bad most departments gave up on them so quickly !

All very nice pieces.
My model 57 is my "Baby" also. I bought it in 1972 for 212.50, through a friend that worked for the Sheriff's Department.
As a matter of fact, I tried out some new loads in her today at the gun club. 265 grain Ranch Dog gc
boolits over 20 grains of H110. Great heavy load.
Hey Jerry, how are those maple grips working on your "other" S&W???????

You were kidding, right?

While I understand the sentiment it would be kind of a shame to take one to the afterlife since I'm sure there'll be some new ones waiting!

I'd like to add a 3 or 4" to the collection though...

OP, beautiful 57 you have. I've owned several 57/58/657s in the past. Currently still tote a 58 when hunting Alaska along with a 14" Contender, 6.5" Blackhawk and 20" Marlin 1894S. Yep, I enjoy the .41 Mag.

I was offered another Model 57 today at our match, but I passed on it. It's new in the presentation box, never fired, 6" barrel, pinned and recessed. The seller bought it new in 1978 and never fired it. I just don't have the cash this close to Christmas, and going to the SHOT Show in January.

So many opportunities, so little cash.......

Fred

PS: Oh, the asking price is $850.00. He's going to hold it for me until the first of March and I'll take another look at it then.

rloaderFred. $850 for an un-fired p&r in the presentation box. You are killing me.

I'm trying to decide what I can sell to get it, but everything in my gun safes is near and dear to my heart......

There is the unfired Winchester Model 100, though.... or the Model 88 to go with it, both in .308. I could probably talk myself into parting with those if I really tried.

Of all my handguns, my 60's vintage mod 57 will be the very last one I sell. I take that back. My son will surely want it. Mike

That's an old PPC rib. I've never seen one on a Model 57!

Hope this helps.

I think limited to open class because it has an adjustable front sight. The OEM front sight ramp has to be ground off to install this rib.

Take it with you...I'm taking my Model 58 when I go. If there is not a shooting range in heaven we will build one. God has to love guns.

To all who shared photos of their 57's & 58's, THANK YOU! They are all very beautiful revolvers. I've never even held a .41 mag of any kind and didn't realize some actually saw use as duty guns for LEO's. IMO the .41 is more capable than the .357 in so many ways.

Nice collection there! Didn't realize Marlin chambered it.

They chambered it in the 1894S and 1894FG.

Special runs for davidsons in 1894CCL and 1894SSLTD.

I've got an 1894S and an 1894CCL. Love em. They really shine with the 255gr LBT and 20gr Lil Gun.

I pick up every article I find regarding .41 Mag hunting/loading/etc. Brian Pearce in the Aug 2013 handloader magazine ran a bunch of reloads through some .41s to find a 4" M57 giving relatively crappy velocity results. I don't know how common that is for S&W's, but I at one time had a 6.5" 657 as well as 4.5" and 7.5" Rugers and the shorter Ruger was usually right there with the 657 at 2" more barrel. An older article on .41 reloading showed a Redhawk handily beating a S&W with the same reloads, but I don't recall the barrels on those except for thinking the Ruger was 5.5". Each gun is its own set of parameters, but I do wonder if anybody's run comparisons of batches of guns to get a general idea of where they stand. I know I've never seen a claim of S&W guns giving higher velocities, all things being equal, than Rugers, but have seen claims of the opposite.

Have yet to shoot a deer with a cast .41, but am hoping to this January. Last month's doe was claimed with a 200gr Speer 3/4 jacket--about as close to a cast as it seems you can get when copper is involved.
