Hi all

I was given one of these

Can someone tell me a little about it, I am using wheel weights in my bullet casting now

Thanks

That's some wonderful stuff, supposedly 9% tin, 19% antimony, and 72% lead.

By itself, it's too hard (and rich in tin) to use, but is great for adding to other alloys. I have a bunch of it and mainly use it with pure lead for a good alloy in various ratios.

10%Sn, 16%Sb, 74%Pb. That's actually close to the formula of a lead based babbitt I use for 2000+fps loads. The only printing alloy harder is the type you get from the foundry.

My 1941 Marks' Handbook lists monotype as 8%Sn, 16%Sb, 76%Pb. It also includes the caveat " Considerable variations from these compositions are often made."

Madsenshooter, you are probably referring to Babbitt alloy No. 7?

Download the "alloy calculator spreadsheet" on this site to see what mixes you can use.

Have you tested that with a file and magnet? It looks rusty, but could just be transfer.

I have seen paperweights like that were given out to customers in the printing industry years ago with the names cast into CAST IRON!

That is a Brand Name and could just be advertising.

I got about 80 +/- lbs of monotype in a 5 gal. pail when a Detroit hospital closed their print shop. A muscular friend of mine that worked maintence for the hospital laid claim to the pail and carried it from the dumpster to his truck to bring it to me. Excellent for "sweetening an alloy or just pure lead.Robert

Thanks for the info guys, i will use it to add to my WW for a harder mix. Got it from a fellow who told me they used to use it to fix bearings on fishing boats.

I mix monotype and COWW's 7:1, and add 1% Sn, for a dang good base alloy. And I cut that 50/50 w/Pb, and add another 1% Sn, for 38 & 45 boolits.
