I use a few different 30 caliber boolits in the blackout. With some success, the best so far is the lee 155 312, I would like to design a boolit that is similar in nose shape and seating length to the rem 115 umc load from the factory.

I need a no bs assessment on why this wouldn't work, I'm ok with just about any weight required and would like it to be a 2+ cavity with a gc shank.

Either the 3rd or 4th picture down 115/125 grain profile. (for reference.)

I wonder if the slender lead point would be strong enough not to bend during feeding in the AR platform. That would be my concern.

Noted, what about the lee 230 nose? That one is pretty slim (5r) no problems here with that one.

Although its not really the weight I want, and am not the worlds biggest fan of the boat tail or tumble lube.

Part of the trouble with pointed bullets is they need a harder alloy to keep the nose from slumping upon firing.
I don't know that you'd get the support at the tip without the jacket, unless you cast them in zinc.

Most who try to shoot the 'pointy" bullets do so to duplicate jacketed bullet velocity. Mostly in milsurp cartridges. When shot at 'warp speed" accuracy most often leaves a lot to be desired.

Is there anyone who makes a custom cast iron mold? I wouldn't mind trying my hand at zinc, and weight would definately not be a concern. My local wheel weight pickup went entirely to zinc now so getting it direct wouldn't be an issue. Can you use be mold interchangibly between zinc and lead? I can still use a harder pb alloy if need be.

Now you've got me thinking... Can you use brass molds for zinc?
If that's the case I might get Tom at accurate to make me a several different cavity mold for a multi use zinc mold.

I don't know - I cast Lead

Yeah I've never used zinc before, but it's time to start learning, who is the guy on here that does so much zinc casting? Might rattle his cage about it.

I'm having good luck with both the Lyman 311410 and 311414 both feed in standard mags easily.
A 311414 with a crimp groove would be a real nice thing.

That looks pretty close to what I'm after, not quite though..
I dida little design on mountain molds page to get a better idea but it is somewhat limited.

I was also wondering about the Lee. Boat tail cast, Hmmmmm. Cool looking boolit though.

It was mentioned in another thread that the 311414 had a long nose profile that tends to tip in the throat at certain pressures. I don't know it the blackout achieves this pressure, but it is something to think about with the long nose profile boolits. I had good luck with the lee 311-155 ak boolit, and the 311410 h/p I got on the group buy seems to be working well for a 125-130 grain boolit. Only one did I have a jam due to the shorter profile boolits, and it could have been other things such as a magazine issue.

The velocity on the 110 vmax at the fastest I can safely drive it outta my 9" barrel is about 2400

These are looking to be in the sub 1750 fps range, given their weight. It might work just fine pointy as hell

I recently bought the Lee C312-155 2R for the 300 blk. The upper is on order so it will be a while before I can test loads. I've made up 400 pieces of brass and cast up some boolits with WW alloy.

Cast, powder coated, gas checked, and sized, the boolit weighs 160. The gas checks are aluminum courtesy of a PatMarlins CheckMaker. I had the Harbor Freight Mini Chop Saw out so I got creative. I cut the gas check shank off of the base which shortened and lightened the boolit. Now, I have a plain based 140 grain boolit. Both boolits will be seated to the same over all length and should feed exactly the same.

I'm going to play with the powder coating to coat the base, maybe even try Rangefinders tumble coating as opposed to the electrostatic gun method. I'm also going to consider getting a 30 cal plain gas check maker from Pat. If they fly well enough I might just buy a second mold and machine the mold block down to eliminate the check shank. For now, I know I can easily cut down some boolits for testing.

I have been shooting 311365GC from NEI since it hit the mailbox. My alloy is 100lbs of 97% lead, 3% antimony, with 2lbs of tin added. 1086fps and 1moa +/- at 50 yards from my 11" bbl AR-pistol.

I shot five 5-shot groups that miked from .965 to 1.012 at fifty off a wrist rest. Haven't done anything but load and shoot since...
