View Full Version : Increasing Performance - Lee 7/8 oz. slug

After a trip to the range yesterday, my first box of Lee 7/8 oz. slug loads left a lot to be desired... I am now looking to start crafting a load that will increase the performance of my loads with these slugs.

The load I recently shot:

Federal Gold Metal
CCI 209
40 Grains HS-6
Ballistic Products 7/8 oz. PT wad (to raise shot collum for crimping)
Lee 7/8 oz. slug cast with pure lead
2 nitro cards under slug

The recoil on these was very pleasant and manageable, even with a max load of HS-6. However, accuracy at 50 yds. was sporadic, and the loads didn't even meet paper at 100 yds. Also, unburnt, and slightly burnt powder would come out of the spent shell after I popped it out. While looking for my used wads, I discovered many sheared off petals right in front of the bore.

I thus concluded that, 1. The wad had too much cushion for such a slow burning powder 2. The petals fit too tight in the barrel (which by the way was a rifled slug bbl on mossberg 535)

How am I going to fix these problems? That is the problem... Here is what I am thinking.

Cut powder charge to 36 grains and use a magnum primer,
Use gas seal under a wad such as the Federal 12S0 or a gas seal, felt spacer and a Federal 12S4 wad with the top of the petals cut off.

I would love to get some advise on whether these loads will be both safe and more effective. Also, what are some other good loads that y'all use. Thanks.

Hello kingemandigger, I would start over again if I were you.
1. Get hold of Commander wads.

as shown in the picture on the right, make sure the slug sticks out from the wad like in the picture and then fold crimp.
2. Reduce the charge to 34, 35 & 36 gr. for the 7/8 Oz slug in 12 gauge.

Good accuracy comes from 2 to 3 gr below Max loads.

Post some picture as to how well it goes.

Thanks for the info. I'll make up some loads according to your specifications soon and post results. I also may try moderate loads with WSF, Unique, and Red dot and see how they do. Might be able to go to the range in 2 weeks...

30 grains of Unique works well.

I was thinking 30 grains of unique, 27-28 grains of WSF?, or about 20 grains of Red Dot
