After a trip to the range yesterday, my first box of Lee 7/8 oz. slug loads left a lot to be desired... I am now looking to start crafting a load that will increase the performance of my loads with these slugs.
The load I recently shot:
Federal Gold Metal
CCI 209
40 Grains HS-6
Ballistic Products 7/8 oz. PT wad (to raise shot collum for crimping)
Lee 7/8 oz. slug cast with pure lead
2 nitro cards under slug
The recoil on these was very pleasant and manageable, even with a max load of HS-6. However, accuracy at 50 yds. was sporadic, and the loads didn't even meet paper at 100 yds. Also, unburnt, and slightly burnt powder would come out of the spent shell after I popped it out. While looking for my used wads, I discovered many sheared off petals right in front of the bore.
I thus concluded that, 1. The wad had too much cushion for such a slow burning powder 2. The petals fit too tight in the barrel (which by the way was a rifled slug bbl on mossberg 535)
How am I going to fix these problems? That is the problem... Here is what I am thinking.
Cut powder charge to 36 grains and use a magnum primer,
Use gas seal under a wad such as the Federal 12S0 or a gas seal, felt spacer and a Federal 12S4 wad with the top of the petals cut off.
I would love to get some advise on whether these loads will be both safe and more effective. Also, what are some other good loads that y'all use. Thanks.
