So if a fella was gonna get a 22 Hornet - Ruger #1 if I can find a good used one, 77-22 H if not (also about half the price!). What boolet / mould should I be looking for ?

Thanks in advance !

Right now i would be concerned with brass.
22 hornet brass is hard to find.
Starline doesn't make it.
I have been looking to buy 1k pieces for a while now. I know 1k seems too much but i am buying a lifetime worth.
I suggest that if you like shooting your hornet that you plan on getting at least 400 pieces of brass.

NOE is getting set right now to do a run of the former BRP 46 gr. Hornet bullet. This has a short nose and long band section which is perfect for Hornet magazines which will not allow long seating. The bullet also has a flatpoint and drops at .226 which is great if you need one that big, but can also easily be reduced if your rifle prefers that. This is a small group buy. Hop on now.

If you want to consider an alternative, I have a Ruger #3 in .223 that I just took squirrel hunting using 45 gr. boolits (Lyman) over 5.7 grains of Green Dot. Made a handy light .22 and the brass is abundant. I'm happy with it. I used to want a .22 Hornet but not any more.

NOE has the 225107 in stock, my experience is very good in 22 Hornet/218 Bee. I've not tried it in .223, but have some test rounds ready when the weather breaks.

I load Hornet loads all the time in my .223. Works great.

I call it my .223 Hornet.

Thanks for the info guys !

I did see that mould on NOE's site.

I'm wanting something quiet and soft shooting (need a break from the 500 ! lol). I hadn't thought of being able to download the 223 to hornet levels - not as efficient, but doable ! Gives me another #1 as an option.

I have a 22-250 #1 - very inefficient to down load I'm thinking. Don't shoot it much, thought a Hornet (or 223 now) would be a better option.

A friend at work is thinking about buying the 22-250, so I may have a new toy for spring !!!

Before you sell the 22-250 it is worth a try loading it down. My bro-in-law has had some success with it.

The .222 Remington is a better cast bullet cartridge than either the .22 Hornet or the .223 Remington.

chsparkman - Would you know what kind of load in-law was using, and what velocity he got?

#1 hornets are $$. A 218 bee would be an alternative. You could get a NEF handi rifle too, in 22hornet. Mine shoots under an inch@100 using J words. haven't done any cast work with it yet.

Personally, I would snag a 225438 mold and exhaust all combinations of sizing diameters and alloys and powder charges before looking elsewhere. You probably won't need to.

Having worked with several .22 CF's over the years, I'm one of the odd balls that feels the Hornet is the ideal cast bullet case- but it takes a fair bit of experimentation to prove it.
