Ok, i have a heavy single shot 410 shotgun... It just sits there gathering dust.... I noticed the the taurus judge shoots the 410 and the 45 colt... My question is, does this mean tat a 45 colt can be shot (carefully) in my dusty 410. If so, i would love to grab a mold or 2 and have a bit of fun with this dust collector.... Anybody play around with this sort of thing? I have limited shotgun experience except putting shells in and killing ducks and geese... I would love to have some fun with this...

No. The 45/410 guns have a 45 cal bore. A 410 is gonna be 410.

Combination guns are specifically made to shoot both cartridges. They are basically 45-LC guns with the chambers cut deeper so as to accept 410-shot shells as well. If your gun is not designed to use both then don't use both in it.

I guess the first thought I had was '" choke" Not good to drive a solid bullet through a choked barrel. Plus it is smooth bore so accuracy couldn't be good. It might be an interesting noise maker though. Get some 410 slug loads and shoot them instead.

I'm curious if a 45 cal slug, or boolit, would drop through the barrel or not. And, what really is the difference in pressure between a typical 45 Colt round, and a .410 bore shotshell.

I imagine if you're curious like most of us, these are a couple of things for you to investigate.

I once blew the last 4" of the muzzle off an old Iver Johnson .44/.410/12mm shotgun by firing a jacketed. ,44-40 rifle load through it by mistake. I still have the gun, having cut off the split muzzle where it opened up like the hood of a cobra snake. The shotgun barrel now slugs. 424" cylinder bore and does shoot either. 44-40 lead cowboy loads, .44 shot loaded in 5 in 1 blank cases, or 2-1/2" .410s. But. 45 Colt, NO way!

Accuracy with. 44-40 ball or bullet is "soup can" acccurate to 20 yards, better than a slingshot, but at 50 yards my Colt New Service revolver is more accurate, as bullets through a smoothbore barrel are " barn door, just barely."

Boy, people just don't seem to "get it" about the 45-Colt vs. 410-shot. I guess I should make it a whole lot more direct.

----- 410-bore shotgun = 13.5K pressure with a 0.410" bore diameter give or take a few thousands of an inch tolerance + choke constriction

----- 45-Colt = 14K pressure with a 0.451"-to-0.454" bullet diameter with equivalent major groove diameter in the rifled barrel

----- 45-Colt/410-shot combination gun = A gun with a 45-Colt size barrel with the chamber reamed longer to also shoot 410-bore shotgun loads.

IT IS NOT A CASE OF BEING ABLE TO FIRE A 45-COLT CARTRIDGE IN A 410-BORE SHOTGUN BUT RATHER A CASE OF BEING ABLE TO FIRE A 410-BORE SHOTGUN SHELL IN A 45-COLT GUN !!! YOU CAN FIRE THE SMALLER BORE DIAMETER CARTRIDGE IN THE LARGER DIAMETER BORE GUN JUST BY REAMING THE CHAMBER A LITTLE DEEPER TO ACCEPT THE LONGER LENGTH OF THE SHOTGUN SHELL ~ BUT NOT VIC-A-VERSA !!! YOU CAN NOT SHOOT THE 0.451+" DIAMETER BULLET DOWN A 0.410" DIAMETER BORE !!! YOU CAN SHOOT THE 410" DIAMETER SHOT LOAD DOWN A O.451+" DIAMETER BORE.

DO NOT CONFUSE THE TWO, JUST BECAUSE IT WORKS ONE WAY SHOOTING THE SMALLER DIAMETER DOWN THE LARGER DIAMETER BORE DOES NOT MEAN IT WORKS THE OTHER WAY SHOOTING THE LARGER DIAMETER DOWN THE SMALLER BORE !!!

+1 on Turbo's last post. IMO, the whole 45/410 combo idea is a really bad one by the gun manufacturers. You can jam a 444M round into a 410 3" chamber but that ain't a smart idea either. Bottom line is you should only load into a gun the round that has been stamped on the gun by the manufacturer.

Thanks for the info! I have a Contender with a .45/410 bbl(never shot .45lc out of it yet) and just kinda assumed that it was the same with most all .410's. Lots of BAD info out there!

Merlin- I just finished shooting the 45 LC in the 45/410 TC barrel. It's pretty accurate on out to 100 yards with a 255 grain SWC of Lyman Keith design. I shot the 410 exclusively for snakes. Wow, the 45 is great! I used 6.5 grains of Unique, great little thumpers.

Good Luck,
