I'm looking into getting a WFN 44mag mold for elk hunting and would like your opinions... What weight??? I have some samples of the lee 310gr boolit but they dropped at .429 and I need to size to .431. I only have one lee mold that has dropped the advertised size without modification. I'm thinking about this:

Is 280 enough or do I need to go heavier? I can chamber the lee without a problem so going longer with the nose wouldn't be an issue. Max distance would be about 100yds maybe 125.

Can't go wrong with the old Keith design 240-265 should be sufficient with a well placed shot.

The Accurate 343-280h you asked about looks like it would be a good choice.
280 gr. should be plenty.
BTW, I'm sure you noticed, that bullet takes a GC, not a bad thing.

I've got a 429640 mold (Devastator HP-GC) that I made a solid point pin for.
Solids drop at 275 grs. Meplat is .300, but I think it would be a very good elk bullet also.
Shot placement is KING!!!

I have that same mold... Took my deer with the large hollow point this year. My original plan was to use the solid for elk but I figured the larger meplat would be a benefit. My original plan was a 320gr mold with the same size meplat but I don't necessarily need a mold that will through and through a Cape buffalo either.

No elk is stopping a good medium hard 250gr LSWC. My all around hunting bullet is the 44Dev modified w/ no gc & shallow cup point. It comes out about 270gr & cast medium hard, 15-1, just deforms the nose enough to cause good tissue damage & lots of penetration, at least on wetpack. I have not tried it on anything bigger than deer & for deer I cast it softer, 25-1 lead/tin. It won't stay inside a deer @ any reasonable angle.
