Looking to do some loads for 1895 lever action ( Marlin) 45-70

Using the "LoadBooks" - for 45-70 :

Lyman bullets section ( page 26)

322gr cast bullet ( Actually around 325 gr - the Mihec hollow point with gas check)

all the loads "designate the use of a 1/2 gr Polyester fiber wad, 5/8" square x 1/4" thick over the powder"

I'm planning to do up a load using Unique powder

Question - in place of the 1/4" thick "polyester" 5/8" square they call out to use,

can I use a :

normal 1/8" think, wool felt pad ( 44/45 cal) normally used such as in Ruger Old Army, between the powder and the lead ball ? - and just use 2 of these on top of the powder load ( Unique 12.5 gr) to het the 1/4" thickness ?

example of the nonlubricated wool pads I would like to use :

Thanks !

No. Wad like that over powder with space between the wad and the bullet is what can lead to ringing the chamber.
Dacron shouldn't be ramped down on powder either. The Dacron should be left as a fluffy mass that touches the base for he bullet and merely holds the powder against the primer.

Wads can work but must always be snug against base of the bullet.

I use Unique all the time. I load 10 grains under from a 330 grain to a 540 grain boolit ... they are accurate and I have never had any problems with this load and NO wadding nor fill over Unique.

the later books and loads do not require the filler of any kind.

Unique is not position sensitive. No need for a wad or filler. I've used as little as 10 gr of Unique with out a filler with good success. My load now is a Lee 457-405-F with 14gr of Unique.

every time i have tried the muzzle up muzzle down thing with my chrony it shows that unique is position sensitive, just not as much as some other powders. just depends how accurate accurate enough is.

What he said about "later books". The new Lyman book does not call out the use of fillers.
