I've heard some stories of how H110 does NOT like being reduced. I'm wondering if Lil'Gun is the same way?

I have a LOT of 250g Hornady XTP JHP's to load for my 45 Colt. I also have a couple pounds of Lil'gun left over from when I was loading .300BLK.
I'd like to use it up, it my manual shows 23.5g as a starting load. Tried that this morning....I'll pass. Call me a wimp but I shoot to relax not be abused and out of my Bisley its abusive. I've driven big heavy cast boolits up around 1300-1400 fps before but this is worse.

Is it possible to dial this powder back down to about 900-1000 fps? I could easily do that with AA#5 or Titegroup but this Lil'Gun needs to get burnt.

Thanks.

I dont belive you can download to that velocity its much like 296 & H110.
It has shot excellent for me from many firearms, a few years ago i bought a 8 lb keg after trying a few 1 lb cans, worked up some good loads but i have discontued the use of it in the FA 454 Casull after reading of the problems with it in that cartradge. but i still use it in the 22 hornet ,357 mag & 44 mag. I have also used it some in the 38 super with good results for max loads.

Yes, it's possible. It isn't as position sensitive as 296/110. It IS temperature sensitive. I've read reports of high ES with reduced loads. If not using a chrono, it's all guess work. I also use 10.2grs lil gun in 300blk with heavy boolits just over supersonic(1250fps), my chrono results have been satisfactory with decent accuracy. Only problems I've read about with revolvers are with flame cutting.

Hmmm, well, I guess I'll trade it off locally.

I asked Hodgdon this same question and did not get a reply. LilGun has a little bit snappier recoil then 110/296 in my experience.

it's not set in stone per say but from my casual observations most ball powders tend to do best towards the upper spectrums

having powder with nothing much to shoot it in is much akin to having a mold one doesnt have a gun for - either way it calls for buying a gun !! :kidding:

I've tried Lil'Gun in reduced loads. It didn't like it much. Velocity variance went way up. I only use it now for medium Hornet and .22 Lovell loads, pressures above 25,000psi per Quickload. In the Hornet it's magic all the way to 40,000psi. Also use it in .357MAX loads in a 12" Contender. Does well there for near-maximum loads with 180 grain jacketed.

The scuttlebutt about it being bad in revolvers is probably true, IMHO. It has a "fat tail" to the pressure/time curve, so it's still burning pretty hot as the boolit passes the cylinder gap, with the obvious effect on the top strap and throat.

Yeah, I've got it listed locally to trade for some Unique.
I know I can reduce that till i get a squib and it can be loaded up pretty darn warm too. Plenty warm enough to get the job done. Best powder ever made.
