Just started casting and I have yet to find a decent thermometer. I got the China made Lyman and the needle sticks until tapped. Come to find out this is quite common and it is something I cannot trust. Is there any USA made thermometers made that can be used for casting alloy? I'd rather spend over $100 for some quality instead of $40 for China junk.

Starrett is the name in calipers and micrometers. Is there such a top quality maker of casting thermometers?

Digi-Sense makes one I don't know the price, but the one I have has a probe that you can immerse.I suspect that they have a thermal coupler that you can mount inside the pot.

Bought mine from Brownells YEARS ago and when it failed also years ago they replaced it free of charge. Don't know what they've got in the catalog now but I'd buy from them again in a heartbeat.

I got mine right here. From Swede Nelson.

I have been very happy with it.

I dropped it, broke the glass, and it still works perfectly.

I have two RCBS thermometers and one cheaper Chinese version. The two RCBS measure very close to each other. The Chinese version was about 10 degrees off, but I can turn face of dial to calibrate and measure same as RCBS versions. The RCBS version cannot be calibrated by turning dial face.

Lyman has a one year warranty. I think the RCBS has a lifetime warranty.

I don't think you can miss with the RCBS.

When not using a PID to control everything I use this one: http://www.rotometals.com/product-p/lead_thermometer.htm

I don't remember paying that much but it was bought awhile ago.

+1 to RotoMetals model. Same make as RCBS for less.

I use the Rotometals. Works great for me and not too expensive.

I did not know that. It looks just like my RCBS versions. Thanks

I think the RCBS, Lyman etc. & possibly the one from Roto are all made by Tru Tell with their own logo, they are made in NY or at least they used to be, I think they still are.

I found this under Tel-Tru:

It does look like the one I bought from Roto Metals.
