View Full Version : 9mm- seating depth vs case volume

Started making test dummies in 9mm. Thanks to this great forum I have eliminated the brass swaging of the boolit using a 38spl expander and a light taper crimp. Now on to the real question.

Eriks' HP Lee 356-125-2R (lemented to .359+") sized to .358" dropping @ 120grn
.750 case length
1.030" OAL
Boolit seating depth is approximately .220"

Comparing this to a 124grn FMJ (photo attached)... Am I using up too much case volume?

Thx, Alan

Understand your 356-125-2R is hollow pointed. What is the length of your HP boolit?

My standard 356-125-2R has a boolit length of .565 and I load to an COAL of 1.055 which gives .260 of the boolit inside the case (given case length of .750). By comparison, Lyman 4th Ed. lists a COAL for Lyman 356402 of 1.110 which puts .264 of the boolit inside the case and specifies a COAL of 1.065 for Lyman 365242 (120 gr) which puts .264 of that boolit inside the case.

I use Lyman load data listed for the RCBS 9MM-124-CN for my 356-125-2R.

You say you have .220 of your 356-125-2R HP inside the case. If you are using Lyman load data I'd say you're OK. Start low and work up is the safe bet.

hiya Ed,
Thx for your respnse. I cast a few fresh samples and these HP's are dropping at +/- 0.494" in length. Using the formula you showed (why didn't I think of that?) I calculated there to be 0.214" of this boolit inside the casing. In comparison to ou data there shouldn't be any volume/pressure issues.

What Lyaman manual are you speaking of? The 49th only shows Lyman and J bullets.

Thx,
Alan

Lee, - I don't really trust the data.

Lyman Pistol and Revolver is a MUST have for hand gunners.
Lyman Cast Bullet is a Must have for casters.

I'm using Lyman 4th Ed Cast Bullet handbook. Agree with WILLIAMWACO, you should get a copy.

Omg,
Overthinking
Load and shoot.
I load a lee 125 RNFP (.360 sized .359) over 3.2 gr of 231. Functions in my two 9mms, no leading, feeds great.
guns are like people, everyone is different.

0.552" boolit length
1.001 COAL.
0.251" IN THE CASE.

that's some concise data NSP... for a (cough cough) just load it and shoot kind of guy. LMAO

If my Ole' Dad were still with us I wouldn't be here askin' questions. Consider it an honor.
