Many years ago I was given two sets of the American Rifleman Magazine from 1927 t0 1993. While it was nice to look thru all those old issues there was no way I could keep them all. They took up too much space. I gave a friend one set and kept one year. The year I chose to keep was 1940. Each month of that year there was an article on American single shot rifles beginning with the Sharps and ending with the Maynard. One month has an article on shooting the big 50, written by Elmer Keith. Another thing that is neat is to read the prices from that era. [as a side note, please don't tell me how little people were paid compared to today. I covered that in another post]. Imagine Redfield, Lyman, Vaver or Marble rear sights for less than ten bucks. A Lyman single cavity mold with handles for less than six dollars. How about that South Bend lathe for 95 dollars. The one that pains me the most is seeing an ad for a new Winchester 1892 saddle ring carbine in 44-40 for 25 t0 27 dollars. I am posting pictures but they are not too sharp.

Sad that you had to give any of those away. I've got probably 90% of the issues since the beginning, and while it's a burden to move and store, I cannot let any of them go. It's a wormhole in time to an era I identify with far more than I do with today's world.

BTW I also have a lot of duplicates, if anyone is interested.

What was even more sad was having to sell all my old Gun Digest's. I had almost all of them from 1945 to the mid 1990's. It was a great reference library.

I will be dead and in the grave before my Rifleman and Gun Digest collection go! Somethings a man just has to say no to.

I picked up quite a pile of old Rifleman, dates from 1940's to 1970's. They are still really good ready. Love them.

One big thing I like is the honesty of those old writers when reviewing products. If it stunk, they said so, and in no uncertain terms.

OK, I'll look. May take a few days. I'm not even sure where all the boxes are. Moved into a smaller house when I retired, and everything looks like Fibber McGee's closet around here.
