I was wondering how to make a mold for the lyman 4500 style lube sticks? I am a cheep plug and buy the Carnauba Red by the Lb, up until now I always just melt it and dump into my lubesizer. Once I spilled the hot lube down the machine and my hand I was interested in seeing any kind of lube molds you guys have.

I would be interested in making "Ben's Red" if I could get it in stick form.

Thanks guys
Joshua

maybe find a piece of PVC pipe with about the same inside dia, and use that

most use 1 inch pvc pipe cut to length. I use a cheap coffee pot that you set on a burner. I melt the lube and pour it into the lubber. I wait until I finish and refill and let it set before I replace the piston. Bill

The only difference here is that I use solid sticks for the Star. Making a lube mold is pretty easy & the sky is the limit if you use your imagination & stuff you have on hand. For this one I split a 2X6 up the middle, placed a piece of sheet rubber in the middle for a gasket & screwed it back together. The tubes are 1" ID aluminum thin wall to dissipate heat faster than the PVC. To get the sticks out 1/2 hour or so in the freezer shrinks the lube enough that a 1" wood dowel pushes it out.

I melt the lube and pour it directly into the 4500. You can put almost twice as much in and no air bubbles. Heat just enough to melt and it cools fast enough to start working almost right away. Wax doesn't hold near as much heat as cast iron.

As simple as it gets. My mold is a hollow leg of a table.. the nice thing is that it has threads to adjust the height and this will accept a threaded rod where I fixed a washer and two nuts to hold it in place. I found all the stuff within three aisles of a hardware store for less than 15 bucks :D Using a portable drill to push the lube stick out after it solidified. Ok, small scale production, but it works for me.

Hope this helps.

I recall reading somewhere that if you dip your mould "pipes" in soapy water before you fill them the lube sticks are easier to push out. I dont' know I just read it.

Please review the answers, photos and instructions relevant to your O P before you go off on a temper tantrum.

Kids these days. Phew.

Now I know why todays parents MUST keep patting their whelp on the back.

If they did not their GIT would not take a deep breath before complaining AGAIN.

I like Rick's deal the best. If'n I was building one, that would be it. Mike
