View Full Version : Using my Boolits in a different way

I just bought a mess of sabots from MMP and Harvester! Both for 44 and 45 calibers. Getting out this week and sighting the T/C Omega with my 240 grain Keith style hard cast in a sabot and over Black Horn 209.

I even ordered some sabots for .475 sized boolits! I know I will not need them for the young does I want to take but just in case I run across a mold at the right price. :)

You should like that 429 Keith style in the sabot for your what I assume is a 50 cal. muzzleloader. I never figured out why but for some reason my T/C muzzleloaders seem to like the MMP sabots better than the Harvesters even though I am told they are made in the same factory maybe because I use only Goex FFF.

Yep, I figured that Keith style hitting a deer at 1600fps will put a hole in the tree behind the deer! LOL

From what I have used the sabots, I think the MMPs like a lower charge of powder. I always had good luck out a on older Accura and 85grs of FFF T7. Anything over 95grs would be a pattern besides a grouping.

The only time I use the sabots now is for longer range shooting at desert mule deer and elk anytime.
The rest of the time I prefer round ball for deer in either 45 or 50 caliber muzzleloaders. With that much "pass through", I got tired of tracking blood trails in the rain.

I like the lee real in 320 grain. 85 grains of Goex and some 50/50 bees wax and crisco. I would like to try my 265 grain 44 cal boolit someday wrapped up in a sabot.

Good Luck

With my fast rate barrel, patch and ball is out of the question. Although I do miss my LH Great Plains Rilfe in .54 cal! That was a great rifle!

BTW, Just put a Skinner Sight on my Omega!

A good friend of mine told me "You CAN"T use A Lee .50 bullet in a Knight! The twist is too fast!" I didn't argue with him as I had shot 2 -3 shot groups under two inches at 75 yards that afternoon. We were discussing what we were taking deer hunting that season. I never did tell him I did NOT use a sabot!

Wow! Hijack away! LOL I have to try those .475s now!

The Omega and BH209 were made for each other. I've shot numerous cloverleaf 3 shot groups at 100 yards with mine using Hornady 250gr FTX and Harvester sabots. TC Shockwaves do nearly as well, and the difference is MMP sabots.

Sabots for .475s? I'll have to look for those. I have some that take .458s.

So you think the MMP sabot is worst? Or is it making the tight groups?
Where did you get the sabots for .458s? Would like to try some of those.

And why are my pictures upside down?

So our friends in NZ and AU can enjoy them! If you'll tell us how you upload them on of the tech-savvy guys around here will help you.

Definitely. I shot that same boolit through a hog. It entered the right shoulder and exited the left ham about 18" later. The big sow was much tougher than a deer. TC Contender, .44 Mag 14" barrel, Hercules 2400 (it's been around a while), 44-250 KT RCBS at 1600 fps.

Savage introduced a SMOKELESS powder M L and I fell in love.

Till I found out that their ONLY accepted load was going to cost me over $1.00 each time I fired one of those J word projectiles.

I went on line and found the Same sabots then finally found a 338 gr H P mould.

Well a 1.5 group at 100 yards costing this old man about .10 puts a smile on my face just remembering about it. :bigsmyl2:

WARNING Savage warns against this practice.

BUT it works for me.

I was wanting a Savage for a long time. But since Black Horn 209 came on the market, I never looked back. Especially with an Omega! Its a great rifle and does everything I need and then some.

I know several guides around here that swear by the Savages.
