Hello, I'll reintroduce myself first and than ask my question. I have been a member here but haven't visited much in the last year or two with being so busy at work. I had a 12 gauge from heck made a few years back and use the bmg brass but have not shot it very much due to single shot and don't like hunting with it. So I started looking and found an Fn slp mk1 with a slug barrel and purchased it. I'm planning to put a reflex sight on it and have a good lightweight and fast handling hog gun. Now I'm looking to feed it and wanted to run a cast lead bullet for it. I was looking at the accurate 73-700s and think that may be about right. Works out to be about 1 5/8 ounce and I found some alliant load data for 1 5/8 ounce lead shot. So my question is basically can I start with this data using the lead slug and use cards and cork spacer to get to the correct shot column height for a good crimp? I have a bunch of the brass and aluminum lathe turned bullets I got when I had the 12 gafh made but would rather save them for that, plus the fact their 3-4 bucks a pop I don't want to go shooting them up. Same reason I don't really want to use brenneke or lightfield, they have decent ballistics but I don't want to spend 3-4 dollars a shot and I'd rather not use saboted ammo.

Thanks for looking and thanks for the help

You own one of the 12ga FH's and you DON'T like it?!?!?!

Anyway, the short answer is: yes, that's basically what we are doing, as long as the slug weight is equiv to lead shot weight and the slug is lead, not some other higher-friction metal.

As a caution, i start in the mid-pressure range for these equi-substitute-slug-for-shot loads, and go from there.

Others more learned will no doubt chime in soon.

Soo.... what exactly do you NOT like abt your 12gaFH? is it the single shot-ness?
Which one do you have?

I have one built on a NEF ultra slug.

Well I don't really like hunting with it due to heavy recoil and the slowness of follow up shots.

Good day gents. I've read thru the discussion and it's really cool what he's doing with his 10 gauge. I'm wondering where the load data should start for 12 gauge? I'm looking now for imr 4759 because I keep seeing it listed. I already have some blue dot. I have some shot cards but I think I probably need some gas seals.

matt,

I am shooting 600g Fullbore HB slug in a HR1871 USH Lite 12g with 44g of blue dot. flattened the only deer I have shot with it. Jason F is shooting a 700g Fullbore 12ga Slug in the heavy barrel USH using 40g of Blue Dot. We both roll crimp the slugs and are using only BPI gas seal and .125 nitro cards for the wad column.
