Anyone know the formula to make 45-45-10 tumble lube?

45 percent Lee liquid Alox, 45 percent Johnson's paste wax, 10 percent mineral spirits.

Cook the solvents out of the Johnson's first, low heat, lots of time.

There is a sticky, look for Recluses 45/45/10 lube.

How good is this stuff?

For handguns I like it. It just works. Easy to do.

Biggest downside is the fact I don't like the smell of Alox when fired and it leaves a gun messy.

Lots of good info here. Cooking the wax down is important.

It is so good I use it for light auto rounds for speed of lubing plain base boolits and I have my own lube on hand all the time. It smokes a bit ,dirty but it works.
I also use it for light target loads in the rifles. Remember you don't need to GOB in on, you won't help it work better.

Cook it with an electric heat- if you use gas the vapors from the wax will ignite.
After tumbling you should barely be able to tell there's lube on them.

So have you seen the powdercoating threads?

Me? I certainly have, I am currently using some hi-Tek coating for handgun use. No PC for me right now, I have plenty of other stuff t mess with right now.

You can buy it from a vendor here:

Quick and easy. Cheap, too.

I recently made some, one thing I am still not sure of is the 'cook off' of the Paste Wax volatiles.

The guide says around 20 minutes. I did this, but how hot? I kept mine hot enough to be unable to put my finger in, but was hesitant to raise the heat too much.

I cooked mine down to just over 3/8 of its original volume. I cooked outdoors on an electric hotplate right in the JPW can at 375F monitoring it with my lead thermometer; used a bamboo kitchen skewer as a measuring stick - dipped one in the uncooked lube, measured the depth, and marked a second, clean one at 3/8 of the original depth with a Sharpie. Just before I reached the mark, the boiling changed dramatically, I measured and had about 8 oz. Warmed and added two 4 oz bottles of LLA and waited 'til it was cooler to add 2 tablespoons of mineral spirits. Mixture is about 45-45-6 and lives in the original JPW can instead of being transferred to a squeeze bottle. I add a small spoonful to boolits warmed with a hair dryer; no need to warm the lube before applying. If you don't have 'free' LLA which came with Lee dies, it's cheaper to buy from White Label.

Does it physically boil and bubble then when you 'cook off' properly?

If X-Lox already is this formula, and way cheaper than A-Lox, why are you still using A-Lox and cutting it?

Doesn't need to boil, don't want that at all. Just warm enough to melt it and hold at that temp for 30 minutes or so.

Keep an eye on it, some here have had a fire.

Because the original formula used LLA.

X-lox could be substituted.

It appears that White Label's "Delux Liquid X-Lox~45-45-10 ~~ 32 oz" is already mixed and ready to use. It's only $15 a quart. I use a slightly rounded 1/4 teaspoon for each of the 2 coats on 200 to 250 45 boolits. A quart would last a very long time - should be more than enough to coat 1,000 boolits a week for a year!

I did actually boil my JPW with lots of small bubbles but watched it constantly and used my lead thermometer to ensure it didn't go over 375F. IIRC it was boiling before it reached 350F, just not as fast. I cooked it outside and had a large pan lid handy in case it caught fire and I needed to smother it.

as far as the Johnson paste wax I cooked a 16oz can down to 8 oz. in a crook pot worked quite well and than added the 8oz Lee liquid Alox cooked for 5 min. and than let cool down a little and than added the mineral spirits. this worked real well for me and the bullet are dry to the touch after 5 hours of applying. everyone seems to complain about the stickiness of this lube but I have never experience that.
