I have long used Ballistol to prevent flash rusting and storage rusting on
Lyman and other iron molds. Easy to apply, works well, and easy to remove with detergent and water.

I have used a product called "Clenzoil" for storing molds against rust, and sometimes for cleaning guns as well. It is touted as a rust preventative. It is however a hydrocarbon based fluid that has to be thoroughly removed from any mold or it will cause casts to have wrinkles so I use Acetone to remove it before pre-heating the blocks. LLS

Love Ballistol for many applications. Should work very well on a mold for rust prevention. It is non-toxic and mixes with water, so mold should clean right up when needed.

If you have love handles around the cans of Ballistol - buy a quart of mineral oil instead to put on your molds. Because Ballistol is primarily mineral oil with some Oleic acid, alcohol and perfume
* pharmaceutical white oil: CAS RN 8042-47-5; Mineral oil
* Oleic acid: CAS RN 112-80-1
* C-5 alcohols: CAS RN 78-83-1; Isobutyl alcohol
* CAS RN 137-32-6; 2-Methylbutyl Alcohol
* CAS RN 100-51-6; BENZENEMETHANOL (9CI)
* different essential oils to perfume Ballistol

And BTW, Ballistol is not a rust preventive ...

Just be aware that eezox may eat some plastics. I know it ate my plastic Hornady reloading block...

Eezox is the best, but it is toxic, and Ballistol works just fine. Here is test which happens to show Eezox right next to Ballistol sample going head to head. Not bad that Ballistol

http://www.ctmuzzleloaders.com/ctml_experiments/corrosion/corrosion2.html

"After one week, only the EEzOx, Ballistol and Lehighs were rust-free."

I have seen other tests with Ballistol and it does very well compared to most every other product. The BP guys love it because it works well. Would not hurt to wipe down with Eezox as I agree it is the best rust preventative. But Ballistol is a CLP and does so much more. The "test" you linked was not a test, but a demonstration designed to ridicule Ballistol. Now I see it was a test on a defunct site you owned or moderated. The test I linked was an unbiased and a side by side comparison. What is wrong with the fact that Ballistol uses mineral oil, among other things?

I use WD 40 because it works well, and cleans up ready to use with brake cleaner( Acetone)

Eezox is my favorite rust inhibitor followed by CorrosionX http://corrosionxproducts.com/cxforgunspage.htm

I really like Ballistol for blackpowder cleanup. I have had issues with flash rust on them using other products. With straight Ballistol or moose milk I don't have rust issues. For storage I do follow up with Eezox.

From the BALLISTOL MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET TECHNICAL DATA SHEETS "Ballistol contains medicinal grade mineral oil, alkaline salts of oleic acid, several alcohols, Benzyl Acetate and an oil from vegetal seeds. The mineral oil is unchlorinated and conforms to the specifications of US Pharmacopeia XX".

How much the other ingredients improve Ballistol over straight mineral oil I don't have a clue but it works for me and my application so I will continue to used it on by BP guns until something better comes along.

I never thought of it for mold storage but the water soluble cleanup has merit.

Do you cut the Ballistol with water for Black Powder cleanup?

7 to 1 normally for general cleanup. Some go 50 to 50. I started at 4 to 1 but found that 7 to 1 works as well or better. The guys that shoot cap and ball revolver seem to like it thicker. I have not had any rust issues at 7 to 1 for cleanup but I do follow up with Eezox

One thing I found out long ago is never use any product with Teflon on a bullet mould.That includes Break Free, Rem Oil, or TriFlow.I don't put Teflon in the bore of my guns either.

Hi John! Rust preventative or not, it does the job. No rust on my molds.

I guess lots of things that clean off with BrakeKleen or acetone would work well, but it is the easy cleaning with detergent ahnd water that I appreciate.

Lyman moulds will rust very easily, even when stored inside your home. So anything is better than nothing. I have used Kroil with good results. Lately i have been using Rem Oil in spray can :oops:

To clean off oil i use MOMAR A.S.A.P. Universal Safety Solvent Chlorinated cleaner.

I keep all my molds in a drawer on top of a sheet of that active anti-rust paper (VCI paper) than lines all the sides and bottom of the drawer, I milled a groove all the way around the inside of the drawer to set a cover (also covered with the paper). I have no rust issues and the molds are dry.

I store my Lyman molds with good coat of Mr. Wrench penetrating oil and then wrap them in a rag. Easily cleaned with a squirt of non-chlorinated break cleaner from W-mart. With the mold pre-heated on a hot plate I usually get keepers on the first cast. I sure do not have any rust issues.
