Very classy! Nice racing black finish (I didn't bother painting mine because I knew how long the paint would last with flames licking up the sides!). I'm not sure about the need for a lid, but full marks for not wasting much of the tank :drinks:.

Thanks. It took awhile. The jigsaw took almost an hour to get halfway around the tank. The sawzall cut the rest in a few minutes.

I found that there is an overlap where the weld seam is located. So next time, i'll cut an inch above or an inch below the weld so that I'm not cutting a double thickness. The Sawzall didn't mind, but it's more cutting.

The bottom of the tank is NOT stable without adding a ring. So, I would highly recommend something to stabilize the tank whether you decide to use the full height or not.

I was able to use everything but the valve, and even that could be screwed back in to seal the lid better. My range scrap tends to have moisture in it, so having a hole lets the steam out reasonably well. The tabs on the lid were to help keep it from falling off, and were the pieces out of the bottom ring that I had cut out.

Many others have built these, but those were some of the things that I found, and it seems to work for me.
