I have a T/C Contender with a 10" barrel , 30/30 Win. with a 2 X - 6 X variable scope on it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/haysb/004-60.jpg

It is a great shooter.

I have come by a Lyman 313492 2 cav. pistol mold that throws an 84 gr. wadcutter bullet.

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?143967-Lyman-313492

I'd like to shoot these at 800 - 850 fps.

I was thinking of starting at 3.5 grs. of B'eye and moving upward.

Do you have any thoughts on a good load for this combination of cartridge case and bullet for mild plinking loads ? Just might make for some very inexpensive shooting ? ?

These w/c's in the photos below have been sized .310" and rolled in 45/45/10 and are drying tonight. I'll be loading these in the next couple of days.

Ben,
I have no experience with such a bullet in 30-30 but I would think your bullseye load or one with similar charge weights of Clays or Red Dot should work pretty well. I'm sure there are other similar burn rate powders that should work well also.
I'm looking forward to your results,
Rick

This is one situation where I actually like TrailBoss. It ignites easily, is bulky, and does well at low pressures. Maybe start with 1/2 case and go from there?

I can shoot 3 gr in my 32-20 and get 750 fps with a 120 RNFP. In my Marlin the main thing I hear is the twang of the mainspring.

I gave all the TrailBoss I had to a 14 yr. old ( who is supervised by his father when he reloads ). The reason is with a 38 Spec., he can't double charge a case.

Would probably do well in my situation. Guess I'll try my B'eye loads and report back with my successes or my dismal failures in this project ? ? ?

Bullseye should work, just a matter of finding the right load. Long as you don't stick a bullet all is good. I think 750 to 800 fps should work quite well.

With my 32-20 load it is fun to ring the 100 yard gong. The time lag is a riot. Pop, wait, think. The impact is barely audible.

Gonna use a filler to keep powder back in case? I have never used bullseye for this type of thing so I can't help you there. It is the right powder though, Unique is too slow and won't give that kind of velocity, it would be better for 1100 fps.

Keep us posted.

Well,...........I don't have anymore questions about the best load for this little wadcutter out of my T/C Contender pistol ! I think I found it today.

BTW, I only loaded about 25 rounds and they all had 3.7 grains of Bullseye ( No filler used )

UUUmmmm, Now you've got me thinking.

I have the Lee 115 gr. " Soup Can " mold that I've removed the g/c shank on. It is now a plain base at about 117 grs.

I woke up early this a.m. thinking about this little wadcutter in my Contender. ( Yea, you're right , when you're thinking of an 84 gr. wadcutter at 5:30 a.m., you're just about over the edge ) .

I'm not the best shot......but I do believe that if someone that was really good was behind this thing that it would shoot in one hole.

Yes, btroj , this thing would really do a number on the squirrel population.

Ben

P.S.- - - I really had fun today with the T/C ! !

My K-hornet 10 in barrel has take a. few tree rats. It is certainly a challenging way of hunting those buggers.

Hard to beat that; accurate, easy on the lead supply, accurate, doesn't use much powder, accurate, fun to shoot...did I mention accurate? Who needs 22's?

Looks like it turned out well, as I knew it would. Seems like you just have the knack for little bitty groups!

Thanks for those nice remarks.

Yes, might seem like that until you realize that the groups that won't fit into a garbage can lid are never photographed. I shoot those also just like everyone else.
