A quick fix but not good long term in a large stainless steel soup ladle. Otherwise, try http://www.rotometals.com/Ladles-for-Casting-s/8.htm

Have picked some ladles up at yard sales or try the Ebay thing, there always seems to be vintage iron hand ladles for sale.

Another source of rowel ladels.
http://www.advancecarmover.com/rowellbottom-pouringladles.aspx

These are a little bit cheaper than rotometals.

You could always forego the ladle and upgrade to a bottom pour smelter. It's simple to do.

I've been using a cheap stainless soup ladle for years, and it's still going strong (although it only holds about 1 1/2 lbs.).

If you prefer to not pour the surface layer, go with one of the Rockwell ladles. If that is not all that important for you, you can weld a half sphere pipe cap to a piece of rebar.

I use a soup ladle (stainless steel) and cut the loop off at the end of the handle then took a piece of wooden dowel about 12" long & about 1 1/2" dia. cut into the dowel lenthwise about 4 or 5". Then just slide the ladle into the handle extention drilled a couple holes thru both bolted together with machine screws and then wrapped with wire. works great and stays cool and keeps my hand a little farther from the pot.

I use a capacitor cap from an old electric motor with vice grips clamped on the screw tab.
The flat side allows me to scrape up almost all the lead in the pot.

I think I need a photo - I'm having trouble visualizing the "cap".....

Probably something like the protrusion sticking up on the top of this electric motor to the left of the lifting ring:

It's a cover that protects the start or run capacitor on an electric motor.

Personally, I would not trust vise grips with molten lead.

Montana made a very humorous reply to the original post.

Yes, a very subtle response - but I'm with Jake, I hate this "shorthand", it's sloppy and as far as I'm concerned shows that the user is lazy. (Not just this user, but all who do it).

As for the cap, yes, I remember those, but I wouldn't use one for scooping hot lead, and certainly not with vice-grip handles anyway.
