I have just ordered my first Hi-Tek coating. I want to order some molds for 9mm and for 45. Which is better, tumble lube type or more traditional lube groove, or does it matter?

Thanks

i'm biased and prefer the larger thicker drive bands.
maybe soon we will see slick side molds for these coatings.

I don't think it matters but bearing surface is a good thing.

I prefer traditional grooves.

Thanks Gentlemen. I have appreciated your input on other peoples questions. Thicker bands it is.

Accurate molds do a 35-135Z , 35-168Z and a 45- 230Z.
these are no groove bullets for coating.

I'm ordering a 35-168Z tomorrow.

Don't get the "Tumble Lube" designs. I wasted 2 months trying to get them to work and ended up getting a LEE 356-125-2R and an AccurateMolds.com #45-230Z.

I'd like to see a slick side SWC. I bet a slick side (still need a crimp groove?) 358429 could be shortened enough to work in 357 mag brass in the S&W N-Frames crimped in a crimp groove. All while retaining it's target weight.

Hmmm......

"still need a crimp groove?"

With revolvers for self-defense, having a bullet jump crimp could be catastrophic. I will never forget the guy in Alaska charged by a 1,000 pound brown bear and he got off two shots with his Ruger Alaskan .454 and then bullet jumped crimp and revolver jammed. Fortunately bear piled up at his feet, too close for comfort. I suppose light loads for plinking could be smooth.

I had some TL moulds left over from when I tried that before going to a Star.

I just started using HT coating and used 125 TC TL LEE/150 RNL LEE/200 FPL NOE/230 TC TL LEE moulds. All worked well and I had no issues with either type. Since I have them I will use them but if I buy new ones for coating I will buy regular moulds.
