35 whelen bragging

Went out to the range with a friend today. He got a new Savage Hunter model in 308 Win with the scope, we zeroed it at 100 then set up a 200 yd target to see what it'd do.

For a NIB rifle with factory ammo it shot shots into an inch or less at 100yds! I was impressed!

So we watched the wind and shot at 200 yds. With the Hornady Whitetail classic ammo 150gr horn interlocked spire point, it was a solid 2" group at 200yds for 3 shot groups.

Now for the bragging part. :)

I brough my 35 whelen with the 210gr cast I loaded up and what I'll use for hunting this year.

3 shot group on average at 200yds 1.5" or less. :) Oh yea baby!

and all touching or less at 100 yds. :)

Bet your friend's thinking hard about cast boolits in his .308.;) That's good shooting....look out deer!

What is the 210gr cast boolit you're using? What powder, charge, and velocity?

That's amazing accuracy for that velocity. I've got that mould on my Christmas list for my 358s.

I love that RCBS 35-200FN. It is my boolit of choice for CBA competition with the .35 Whelen.

Just got one of the NOE 200 grainers about 2 weeks ago. Love it! It pours boolits out quick once it's hot enough.
I like the flatter nose profile it has over the RCBS for hunting purposes, but they both shoot great.

Sounds like my range trip today, 35 Whelen doing well enough but I tried out one of those newfangled dot scopes on my thutty-thutty. My buddy next to me was shooting and 1897 and a 1907 vintage 94 with Marble sights. Both shot better than my new gun & dot scope....and my shooting partner is 71 years young!

4895 is sweet powder for this and the 35 Whelen is way under appreciated as an all purpose round for North American hunting

I use H4895 exclusively in my 358 Win. I found that it produces the most velocity with the least amount of pressure for 225gr bullets, I'm shooting a 232gr boolit at 2209fps using 42gr H4895 (never tried to go faster than that). If I do my part I can keep 5 shot groups under 1", I'm working on my technique. After Christmas, the mold I just ordered will be a present from my wife or kids, I will begin load development with the 200gr mold with my wood stocked 77 that I just got, haven't shot it much.

I thought hard about a 35 whelen, but at 2202fps a 230gr boolit out of the 358Win seems like it hammers me hard enough and will be plenty of power for anything that I want to put down in North America. It's amazing how much harder a gun kicks when you're not resting it on sandbags on a bench. I'd love to get similar velocity as you are getting with that 200gr boolit, but I'm more concerned with accuracy. You clearly managed BOTH, Bravo my brother of the silver stream !!
